I have a driver who is really interested in buying the truck he is driving. I am almost to the point of letting him do a 2 yr L/P from me. I am not a fan of L/P but my question is for those of you who are. Would you like the idea of a L/P, $1 buy out of an older pre-egr truck with no warranty if the price was right?

I buy every truck regardless of age without a warranty, I see more bankruptcies due to the down time and tow bills that accrue because guys are trying to keep a truck running using dealer mehanics than any other single reason.

With so many opinions expressed, I would have expected more votes and input. Interesting.

I would say it's safer then just buying it out right if the driver has ability to opt out mid way through if they realize they're in to deep.

I would not offer a "Walk away". Want to play the game? You have to be willing to assume the risk.

But if you did offer a "walk away " think of how much money you could make by selling the same truck 10 times..... it works for Prime. Lol

well, you seem like a good guy and your driver seems to be a real go getter. Here's what I would do, let's say the truck is worth $50k. So, $500 a week plus contribute $150 a week into a breakdown EMERGENCY fund......that is to say, tires, PM's, whatnot comes out of his pocket.
If everything goes well, he will have bought out the truck in 2 years and have between $10 and 15k in his pocket out the door.
In the meantime, you've sold your truck at a decent price, taught your new O/O how to run a business, and have covered your hiney all at the same time.
There ya go. Let us know how it works out

The preliminary numbers I have worked out are a little better than that:
    $250/wk truck (2 years= $26k total)
$150/wk trl rent (includes tags not maintenance)
    $100/wk insurance on both
    $100/wk 18 weeks for IRP
    $55/wk 10 weeks for 2290
    Pays 80% of the gross

only thing that looks funny is the $150 a week for the trailer. Might be your cost, but dang that seems high.
But it looks like you're on the right road
