Just got text from management, laid off until further notice. Took 2 days to gather my thoughts and try and decide what to do... use my vacation pay to ride it out (hopefully?) Or try to get a gig pulling a box again... what do y'all think?

Put your vacation pay in a retirement account and keep working somewhere.

I agree with Chinatown...hands down probably the smartest route to take. As a driver there's plenty of jobs out there. Find a better job and/or a job you like better. Good luck to ya!

Hauling new cars, I assume? It's that time of year. We have a few railcars in the pipeline, but most of the plants will be down 3 weeks this year, so the next 4-6 weeks are going to be mostly dead. Although there are several ongoing spot buys I know of personally. (Hello?!? Mr Manufacturer... how's that low-budget carrier contract working out now?)

Exactly. And with an 18 wheeler (or more) car hauling background, as long as you have the endorsement(s), You'll have NO problem getting in to "our gig(s)". . . .

Save that money, man... as @Chinatown said~!!!!!!! Can't stress that enough.

I never heard of truck drivers being laid off.
Either the company goes belly up or the drivers
Are starved out till they finally quit and find
Another job. Then the company doesn't have
    To pay unemployment.

I wish I could get laid off, I'd be at the unemployment
Office an hour before they opened.
And milk every week I could out of it.

    Rowsdower and Brandonpdx Thank this.

Unless your company is one of those contacted to haul all those illegal Volkswagens to the ports to be sent back to Germany
