If he is a new O/O and getting his own authority was not part of the business plan I would look at leasing with someone while exploring that avenue. Many great businesses have started out of desperation but it should be a last resort.

What part of the country is he look to run out of?

We were O/O with CRST and a certain agent. We did fine. The agent would get pissed off because we worked too much and didn't come home. We moved to Landstar and work as we wish. CRST has called and asked if we would come back. No.

CRST takes on newbies. If one gets on well at CRST, he/she can do anything. They will take a driver with an accident and a ticket and...how many points does your son have? Have you tallied your son's points? He lost a job because of points.

Landstar demands a good record. DH applied 3 years ago, 2 years ago and 6 months. In the interim, he had his own company and leased with CRST. We didn't hear from Landstar for months. When we called, they were working on the application. He worked right up to orientation. Even though he put in his resignation, no one believed him. He had to quit in writing, 3 times. We also didn't believe DH was hired, until orientation and 2-3 loads, with Landstar.

The first 2 times he applied, they said everything looked good. They would call, ask questions and it never happened. We didn't pay attention until they called him for orientation. That made it real. He skipped the first one and they booked him for orientation. He still had his job, when he went to orientation.

    I think you missed something.

Has your son applied to CRST?

    those are strctily o/o companies.

then there are crst, jbhunt, schneider. and i'm sure some others.

as far as getting your own authority. the govt has changed the rules and it's not as easy as it once was. probably not even worth the time to have your own authority anymore. not to mention the extra hassles of filing your own paperwork, finding and hauling your own loads. doing your own billing. and hoping you get paid. establishing your own customers.

i've heard a lot of chat on the cb that mostly agree with my thoughts. it's just too much risk and headache.

while it's a nice idea. i think most o/o's would agree that it's just too much hassle and not really worth the risk. and you'd really need some moola saved up. it don't take long to burn through 100g. if your not getting paid in a timely manner. you've got a truck to run and bills at home to pay.

I'd call it disappointment. You should never sign the papers until you've signed the papers if that makes sense. I wish him luck. Don't let this give you a bad taste about Landstar. Like everything else, they outsource their recruiters to a third party.

There is an important lesson to be learned here for others wanting to lease on with Landstar, or any other company after buying a truck.
What your son should have done is put a deposit on the truck, with it being contingent on his being accepted at Landstar. If he gets denied, he gets his deposit back, if he wants. Also, his payments for the truck won't start until he accepts delivery on the truck.
That's how I did it. I bought my truck from Arrow in Tampa. I put my deposit on it, and they held it for 4 weeks until I was accepted. If I had picked it up at the time i put the deposit down, I would have had a payment due before I earned any money towards it.
I know it's too late for him, but maybe this will help somebody else.

I guess the message continues to be "buyer(applicant) be ware! The thing that made us "sure he was accepted" was the email that detailed several items to be completed, "and he would be in orientation next week". Things like, copy of the truck registration/title, copy of the inspection report on the truck on "Landstar" form, etc. Oh well, that's history. He is checking several companies with lease openings, and a friend who is o/o for over 35 years is coaching him in getting his own authority. Thanks for all the input and help.

If that's the case, I'd call corporate and get a more clear answer and provide them a copy of that letter.
