I can tell you one thing, I will never fail at Landstar because I will never work for someone that takes that big of a chunk out of the pie and I still have to pay for everything and still hunt for my own freight.
"What has Landstar Done For You Today"

they file your road and fuel taxes...... That's worth 35% isn't it?
-
Okay, MM came up with one. What else do you get for their big percentage that you pay them.
1. They file your road and fuel taxes.
2.
3. -
they let the agents decide what your rate will be a month after you deliver the load!
You get a lovely landstar dry van that's almost as heavy as my reefer. ANd I had it figured that you were only aying about $90 a day on a good days running, oh of course that's a percentage was was based on some very low rates so it may be more by now -
I can say I don't know much about the van side of Landstar. I pull a flat here, it is my own trailer, and I love it. I would put my numbers up against anyone out there hauling broker fright any day.
As far as Medicine Man getting taken advantage of by an agent I think he has some responsibility in that. I make EVERY agent I haul for email me a rate confirmation on EVERY load I do. I ran my own authority for 5 years prior to coming to LS. I cut my truck cost $.25 a mile with all of the discounts I get here. I can say I do run less miles here than I did on my own but my net profit has stayed about the same.
Landstar is what YOU make it. I don't want or need someone to hold my hand to go to work. Are there things I would change here if I could? Yes, absolutely. Am I happy here? Yes, absolutely. I am not one of those guys that has been here 20 years, I have been here 2. What works for some does not work for others.
Meathead, I can with absolute certainty tell you that LS takes 20% of every load they broker. What ever the number they pay you, they have taken 20% off of the top. So with that in mind, I get 73% of the gross pay of the load. So, by doing the math, I am only giving up 7% more than any broker truck. My discounts here and the piece of mind that I will get paid in a timely manner is worth 7% to me. The 7% I give up is also only taken out of the linehaul. I get all fuel surcharge money and all accessorial charges at the rate of 100%. Again I would put my net profit numbers up against anyone pulling broker freight. After all, it's not about what you make, but what you keep. -
you can't compare the flats side with the van side. Different worlds.
Ya I have some accountability in that, It was a hard learning curve, They sure never told us about that in orientation. I used to be independant back in the day too but I was figuring I was more protected being in a company so I wasn't getting comfermations on every load. I was getting them but I wasn't real diligent about it. That changed -
I wasn't trying to bash you at all. They should tell people to get comfirmations in orientation. I also wasn't trying to compare flats to vans as I am sure they are two totally different worlds. Vans are the most competitive part of the trucking industry and I for one have no interest in being a part of that.

I was going to get into flats when I was there but ever since my back surgery i've been a bit leery of getting into it. last thing I need is to throw my back out and be stuck laying on the deck of my trailer.
the vans are BS. Van freight everywhere sucks. I do reefers now. It's where I started in trucking long ago and it's just what feels right to me -
You just keep telling yourself that and you'll be fine.
