I have yet to take a "fill in trip" in my career.
Far from "all evil" in my perspective; it's simply pathetic to deal with customers that have the bar set so low: and attempt to scrape bone away with flesh before offering it up for consumption.
The load I referenced is the type of load that a BCO will proudly tell an outside carrier how they get to pick over the good loads before they are offered to the public.
IMO it's pointless to deal with cheap customers: irregardless direct or thru a broker. If customers don't have a worthwhile reason to transport their goods (deadlines/contract obligations/etc) and want to save a couple shekels by using a cut rate service provider: let them. They'll get to find out firsthand why that service provider deserves what they charge.
There is no such thing as a backhaul. "I'm going that way anyway" is what people that don't know how to run a trucking business say.
In the 80's hauling garbage off Long Island was lucrative. Now every load goes for under $1 a mile. Because lots of carriers bring freight to the vacuum that is Long Island. "I can make more money if I'm (cutting the rate) loaded going in, and get a load coming out (hacking the rate there as well) "
There's always someone justifying why hauling cheap makes sense.
I charge round trip at 1/2 day or full day rates whether it goes across town or across the state or many states away. If it doesn't pay or "someone else will do it cheaper" ####em, I'm not in a position of weakness that I need a cheap load.
Landstar is getting cheap.

DH in some situations yes you can make work. But in most all cases your not making more money or saving time.It is the numbers that’s what it is. If you had 2 trucks both left with a 500 mile run at $1500 and truck 1 you brought back empty to reload as fast as possible and truck 2 you loaded back for only 1.25 or $625..truck 1 runs 3 trips that week for $4500 at 3000 miles, truck 2 only ran 2 trips for $4250.so where is the time savings and did truck 1 really make more money.fuel for 3000 miles say 5 mpg loaded for 1500 and 10 mpg empty total fuel usage 450 gallons at 2.50 $1125 truck 2 5 mpg for 2000 miles at 2.50 $1000..So yes truck 1 made $100 more and ran 1000 miles more.

Not worth it at all. Not to mention, those extra 1000 cost roughly .20 a mile @ 200 for maintenance. In reality, you're in the hole for 100.

If I hauled #### that ####in cheap I'd agree with you about taking cheap backhauls: alas, I don't take cheap headhauls, so I don't need cheap backhauls.gokiddogo and spyder7723 Thank this. -
