What's unambitious about working better paying freight and keeping more net?

I think he was sayin to work better freight and work harder. I say if your happy and are living comfortable work as little as possible. That level varies from person to person though.

Based on my observations and discussions, I would say that O/o who and run the whole year (80 - 150 k miles) their net income ranges 70 - 130 K a year with 1 truck. Those over 100K are not that uncommon but their number decreases. It could be hard to argue benefits of being o/o vs a company driver if both are netting 65k a year or less. On the other hand, becoming an o/o felt like a big time nobilitation to me. So there is "beyond money" aspect to it too.

    A couple of corrections -

1 - The per diem calculation you gave isn't quite right. You take your gross figure to the CPA, and all of your deductions - the per diem'$11,850', becomes a deduction from the gross further driving down the amount you pay taxes upon.

2 - Keeping costs low is part of raising net, but as I quickly found, achieving a blistering rate per mile helps net much faster than penny pinching on fuel/maintenance/ aerodynamics etc.

However - expense reduction, debt management or elimination, credit and equity building, tend to be traits of sustained, successful business, but are often already learned habits.

We've all seen the threads of folks asking how to get started with no cash, bad credit - poor work history. You know it drives the success rate down. Not always, but usually.

I find this industry fascinating for the fact that it involves such a vastly different array of operating models - it truly is 'Different strokes for different folks '.

Yea 10-4. Per diem I gave was $50 (estimate of 80% of 63 or whatever 2016 going rate was). We are saying the same thing, but what I was telling him was; someone may net 60k on paper but his net was 11k higher just before one deduction. So deductions & expenses play a big part in coming up with net pay.

& no doubt about the rate comment you made too.

I don't think anyone mentioned the fact that your not going to hit the ground running the best freight and your going to make some mistakes. Figure a full year to hit your stride. You got a lot to learn.

I always said to myself that I would take it easy after I pay my house off. Once I paid my house off, I worked harder since every thing I make now I get to keep.

Unfortunately the LS drivers may not have known how to negotiate for more $$$? Ran into a bunch who didn't know that they could do the same...
