radassets, You haven't yet got into costs between you vs rbht. When you do I think you'll be closer than rbht thinks. Apples vs Apples tells ALL the story.
It cost me $1.10 a mile to run my trucking business thats every single cost associated with operating ,so on my $1.92 a mile gross i make to me $.82 a mile. what got me going on this thread was that you do partials , hauling partials you should do better money wise than hauling full loads if you or your dispatchers knows what there doing, you cant pick up a partial for $1.00 and run 500 miles to the next you need to plan the trip so you fill the trailer with the least amount of miles and unload the same way. And i dont care what Landstar makes per mile its what the truck operator makes that matters. i make $1.92 all miles and pay my cost you make $1.27 and pay cost maybe not as many but still some. Landstar is taking $.50 a mile off the numbers you posted, thats alot of money to lose.
I posted my numbers to the truck. It costs me $.89 a mile to run my trucking business. I receive a lot of discounts for being leased to Landstar. So by doing the math I make $.93 a mile to me after expenses. That's an $.11 per mile increase over your numbers. There are benefits to being leased to a large carrier. One advantage it gives me is that I can haul cheaper than you and still make more profit which opens up more freight to choose. The other advantage is, I don't have all of the headache paperwork you have. I have said it before and I'll say it again, I ran my own authority for years and I work less and net more being leased to Landstar.
Keep in mind you have fixed expenses like insurance, plates and other stuff that doesn't go up as you run more miles unlike tires, oil, tolls and other items which are called variable expenses. So, with that said. A person running 12,000 miles a month at $1.25 per mile will net a lot more then a person running 9,000 miles a month at $1.25 per mile. The more miles you run the lower your cost per mile will be. I think it was Landline magazine that recently published a nice spreadsheet that shows this. Thanks for posting your numbers! Takes guts. Everyone else makes $25.50 per mile for all miles ya know....lol
i just started with landstar, yes i had my own authority, when wife got sick i gave it up and now leased on with landstar, boy i am already ready to quit!!!! all i see is garbage loads on the load board, northeast less then 2.00 a mile and Florida garbage, where are all the loads that go to Chicago, OH,IN AL,GA, etc you don't see them, i live in Va, i done called and called these agents in Va, over and over but no success..... i didn't have to work this hard to make it on my own, what was i thinking to lease on here..lol, i do pull a flatbed, also they left out that i have to put fender mirror on my truck WTH dream on...that wont happen, the charge backs are crazy, and for the one that don't have to make as much cost of business they must live in a hut, or don't know how to add up there figures, mine all day long is a 1.20... well have fun, this might not be for me.!!!!!
Just because the Agent is in VA don't mean they have freight in VA. Your having the same problem that most new BCO's have: Who to call for good freight.
I most certainly DO know how to add up my figures. I don't include my household expenses in my business expenses, they are two separate entities. As for living in a hut, if you call a 4 bedroom, 3 bath house a hut, I couldn't afford your house either. I would also like to know what charge backs you are talking about. Not sure what part of VA you live in but if you are close enough call the agent in Charlotte, NC, the get air conditioners at a pretty good rate.
From what I have heard it's not really fair. Agents hold onto their loads and don't post them. Unless your one of the good ole boys they won't give you anything good. Not fair at all.
Wa Wa Wa! Everyone wants to start at the top,do you think load board are full of all the freight from brokers with none held back. I know brokers don't have favorites. If you want fair go to work for a per mile company where the new guy gets the same as the old hand. This is trucking, not kids soccer where ever one gets to play and the score dosen't matter.
