You must pull a dry van for LS right?

You must not own or lease your own trailer right?

I just checked Flatbed loads out of Kansas City and I wouldn't mind being there right now. Multiple loads well over $2.00.

Freight gets slow every winter. I've been driving for 2 and a half years now and it's always slow this time of year.

I always take a month off at least during the Holidays. One, to be with Family. Two because freight is slow.

I always try to work hard in the summer so that I can have savings for the winter.

I would never work for a negative while hauling loads. I’d sit in the truck or park it at the house first. Just doesn’t make sense hauling someone’s freight for free.

    Just my opinion.

Landstar earnings....5.5 day turn because of appointments..

Kansas city to St.louis MO- deadhead actual miles - 279

St.louis MO to Rochester NY - loaded at 44,000 at $2.00 a mile...

    $2.00x 834 miles =1,668.00 actual miles were - 962

Rochester NY - Erie pa - deadhead actual miles - 200

Erie pa to Kansas city MO -loaded 35,000lbs at $1.27 mile

    $1.27x 895 miles=1,136.65 actual miles were -1000

so we have to break the REALITY DOWN,NOT FANTASY...

    ACTUAL EMPTY MILES = 479 DIVIDE BY SAY 8 MPG=59.8 GALLONS X (AVG 2.25)= $134.00 FUEL USED

    ACTUAL DRIVEN MILES WERE= 1,962 DIVIDE BY 6.0 MPG =327.0 GALLONS X (AVG 2.25) = $735.00 FUEL USED

    LOADED PAID MILES =1,668.00 - TRIP #1
    LOADED PAID MILES =1,136.65 - TRIP #2

TOTAL MILES DRIVEN BY WAY OF HUB = 2,441 MILES
TOTAL ALL PAID MILES WERE = 1729 MILES

    712 DIFFERENCE

Grand total of $2,804.65 to the truck...

    know take $2,804.65 and x 65% (landstar cut) = $1,823.02

know take $1,823.02 - (fuel) $869.00 = $954.02 total to truck so far..

    DEDUCTIONS

    1- WORKERS COMP = $32.00 WEEKLY
    2- PLATES AND PERMITS = $35.00 WEEKLY
    3- FUEL TAX (AVG) = $40.00 WEEKLY

    954.02- GROSS TO TRUCK
    -494.19- DEDUCTIONS
459.83 - BOTTOM LINE AT LANDSTAR....

There ya have it.Know everyone can cut the corners like i no your going to do.We can sit here and dissect every last piece of the penny. But this is an average being an owner...

Know for the kicker...These rates you are looking at do not really exsist at landstar in the here and know...Most of the loads are paying below $1.20..
with alot of deadhead attached to them....

if i missed anything or miscalculated please let me no what i may have missed here....AND TRY TO BE KIND ABOUT IT...LOL,LOL,LOL

    THANK YOU...

Thanks for all the information. I was accepted by Landstar but have been watching the board for information and I think I will give it some serious thought before I sign on the bottom line. Maybe things will improve in a couple of months.

    For comparisons sake only:
    5 day working
    IL to TX
    TX to PA
    all miles 2567
Rate to Truck $4226 (after LS %, my trailer)

    OOOPS hit wrong button
This was with nearly no deadhead miles, just lucky on this one. Also had a $1000 partial cancel on the IL to TX. That leg was 2 partials. TX to PA a truckload, but only weighed 4000#, actaullay a partial. Just no others available to go with it.
    So $4226- $962 fuel (2567 miles / 6 mpg x $2.25 ) = $3264
less the $500 wkly expenses and fees as exampled earlier = $2764

Now, I feel lucky by putting this turn together the way things are right now. And will be p.o.'d when I cant repeat it for awhile. Not long ago, weeks?, those numbers were higher and easier to do. But here we are

Also, I pull a stepdeck. And flat and step loads have been real ugly lately. And the fuel mileage on this trip was actually way above the 6 mpg figured with that 4k# load to PA. So I got a fuel bonus!

This turn is a current one too, by the way. Delivering the PA in the morning.

And for the beautiful part of being an owner operator.... Last Thursday night I spent about $300 on the truck on odd mtc things that reared there ugly heads all at once. Of course, at the time of getting a 120 day Landstar full inspection. I never have that problem! Am always/ usually ahead of those things. Oh, yes, at Landstar you get trk n trlr DOT inspected every 120days. And it passes, or you sit. Fix it, or sit.

you are the 10% lucky ones who have been working with agents and have solid relationship with the agent evidentially...

But that is 10% of the bco's...90% struggle terrible...its very sad...

so yes i agree with you...but again 90% are down and out....10% like yourself have been very lucky...keep up the good work.

I had that for years but everything went to crap.I lost alot of work and agents who gave it to cheaper bco's..

i am hanging in there but parked for now..
