If you are already in and have a low or no truck payment you would probably survive.
But its true there is a lot of cheap freight on their load board. When the economy turns around so will they.

I used to be a BCO with Landstar. I had an accident in 2006 that was not my fault and they stood behind me 110%. My truck was totalled and I had only had it for 6 months. I had a lot of trouble with the truck and did not have the money to buy another one, so I got out of it. I am now an agent for Landstar but freight is so slow right now that I'm having to get back into a truck just to make ends meet until things pick up. I love Landstar! They are hands down the best company I ever worked for as far as driving goes. The agent side of it is nowhere near as rewarding. I would recommend Landstar to any owner operator. It's true, they have a lot of cheap freight, but being an agent I can tell you, we have to be competitive in our rates or the customer will get someone else to pull the load. I can tell you that an average flatbed load out of here is about $1.50 per mile. That is everything included, FSC, tarp pay and all and that is terrible money, but that is what they are getting other carriers to pull it for. Times are tough and these customers don't care how good a company's safety record is as long as it is the cheapest rate.

There rates are down so low and deadhead is up very high..You just can not justify all my miles ran....
People at LANDSTAR are living in a dream world at this stage of the game...
No matter were you go you deadhead alot of miles and then your into another ''crap area''.......
I can't believe people think they are making ''MONEY''..
Yes,many years ago you did,but NOT KNOW....
read my EXAMPLE of the TRUE NUMBERS, and not the FANTASY NUMBERS...LMAO
I did a trip and in the end i gross out at $900.00 BEFORE TAXES for 2500 TOTAL MILES...actual..Not the PAID MILES,TOTAL 100% MILES YOU DROVE THE TRUCK..
That is everything taken out....And i mean EVERYTHING....
When you buy a TRUCK,all your doing is BUYING A JOB......Thats it....
Have a breakdown you have lost earnings for the week...Its a very RISKY BUSINESS..
I know guys with ''fleets'' that have been with LANDSTAR SINCE IT BEGAN AND THEY ARE STUGGLING TO MAKE 2,800 GROSS FOR THE TRUCK IN A 6 DAY RUN...Many have sold trucks and are ready to toss in towel..I have known these people for 20 years and they can't believe it....
And yes C.H. IS INVESTED IN LANDSTAR.SO THE RATE IS DRIVEN DOWN EVEN MORE....RUMER IS C.H. AND LANDSTAR WILL BE 1 BY THE END OF 2009...
I made more money running containers from staton island to buffalo ny 4 turns a week then i do with landstar...

Columbia MO - Warrenton MO- DEADHEAD= 90 MILES(NOT PAID)
Warrenton MO - Orlando fl - paid miles 1,050 at 1.71
actual miles are 1,155
Orlando fl - Savannah GA -DEADHEAD 330 MILES (NOT PAID)
Savannah Ga - Kansas City MO-paid miles 1,051 at 1.01
ACTUAL MILES ARE 1,160
EMPTY MILES ARE = 420
PAID MILES ARE = 2,206
ACTUAL (DRIVEN)MILES ARE =2,626
FIRST LEG IS 1,050 X 1.71 = 1,795.50
SECOND LEG IS 1,051 X 1.01 = 1,061.51
1,795.50 + 1,061 = 2,857.01
2,857.01 --(LANDSTAR CUT) 35% = 1,857.05(GROSS)
DEDUCTIONS
2626 (ALL MILES)/ 5.5 =477.7 GALLONS X 2.40 =1,145.89
1,857.05 (GROSS) - 1,145.89(FUEL) = 711.16
711.16 TOTAL TO THE TRUCK FOR 5 DAYS OF WORK.. -

thank you very much.that may help...thanks -
What can you say. They hired ''cheap drivers'' at landstar to do ''cheap labor''..LANDSTAR HAVE BEEN PLAYING THESE TRICKS FOR YEARS.They actually did this as much as 10 years ago.People have just become ''very smart'' to ''LANDSTAR AGENTS EVIL WAYS''..
Good agents back then were hard to find and now very hard to find.I personally no many of them that just toss there''product'' on other load boards and get ''joe blow trucking'' to do it dirt cheap and line there pockets with more money.
Rumer has it that Landstar and C.H are joining forces by the end of 2009.So Drivers are just a '' "Captive" audience...There might be a day that ''landstar'' wont need drivers and by-pass it all and cut all expence.
I do no this much.Up until 1.5 years ago landstar had great paying freight.I made alot of money ''back in the day''..Very important also is Landstar drivers had the best equipment on the road.Very ''decent'' respected drivers.Today i hate to say it but i could not believe what i seen at the ''orientation'' center and my visit to Jefferson GA..It looked like a homeless shelter, nasty equipment and alot of drivers that smelled and were not well groomed.
At one time ''Landstar'' was the top of the line.Today from what i observed is they have become just ''another'' carrier..
In the future There will be no ''LANDSTAR''...It will be bypassed to ''cheap drivers with cheap equipment that will haul the ''cheap freight'' this is only the ''sign of the times''..
My neighbor and his wife can attest to this. They are a team and hauled A@E for 20 years with landstar. They made ''huge money''.Today they are an agent also. They see it going for 1.40 a mile to teams everyday..sad but true..
I feel after 22 years of this circus called ''trucking'' we have to put the ''BLAME'' were it belongs...and the blame is the ''DRIVERS''..
The drivers will always be to blame for this industry. There will always be alot of drivers willing and ready to haul for .50 cents and an all you can eat buffet...lmao
Until the ''drivers'' stop this nonsence, they will drive the rate to ''doing it for free''..
I miss the ''old landstar'',the ''old loyalty'' and the ''good'' drivers of the old landstar..I can not compete with a smelly driver, living in his truck, cooking in his truck, crapping in his truck,no kids,no wife,no life and he could haul for .50 cents. Not to mention he had no home,no bills and nothing that resembles a ''life''..He lived in his old 1988 beat up truck. That was there only ''resposability''
How can you compete with that type of person? You cant if your a well ''respected'' family man..
After my stay in ''Indy'' and ''Jefferson'' i finally realized it might be over for me..I just could not believe my eyes of what ''landstar'' had become...
