If you pull an open deck, is it a requirement to have a can gard or headache rack?

I think they removed the requirement for a headache rack but I wouldn't haul flatbed freight without one. I have hauled plenty of van freight at Landstar too. Van freight is easier to find and going to a dead area with a van usually isn't as bad as with a flatbed. With van freight there is more competition for the loads so when a good one comes up you got to move fast to book it.

Yeah it is probably best to start with a van until you learn the system

Why do people always want to jump straight to a step deck?

The law now states that if you don't have a headache rack you have to double up the fwd strap or chain.

Yeah Mastllc, I see you in Jar - head thread and I didn't want to start another Schneider vs Landstar battle in his thread but most van guys use Landstar trailers. The only reason to get your own trailer would be if you was hauling for the same agent(s) all the time without dropping & hooking.

Some of the best contract freight on the board is drop & hook.
I've seen some of the rates those guys are pulling & after Landstar cut, our rates is a little better.

Not trying to get a bonus or slander SNI choice as if I wasn't at Landstar I would probably be there but Landstar is far superior of the two

    mastllc Thanks this.
