I was with Landstar for about 6 months, I went into it as an experiment because I wanted to see what it was like. There was only one problem I had with them and that was that their trailer fleet is too small. A few times it took as much as a week to get an empty. Other than that I had no problem with them I made money while I was there and was running primarily off the load board. My issues where 1) with my truck, I had leased an old truck to try this with and I had problems keeping it on the road and 2) while I liked choosing where I went, it was an extra job I just didn't want to be doing. Who really wants to cruise a load board for 3 hours after driving 11 hours? But that's what you're going to have to do til you make your bones there. Ultimately the reason Im not there is because I realized that in order to do well there Id have to get a solid newer or new truck and I just didn't want to live in it for the 3-5 years it would have taken to pay it off.
Over all Landstar is a good place if you dont mind doing the job of a truck driver + load planner + accountant. If you aren't up to it though or like to make bad decisions, or like to blow your entire check because it's there, then you're not going to make it there.

I don't think I can get to Landstar fast enough. Approved to go, just waiting until I get my ducks in a row before making the transition.
Talked to several Landstar BCO's and everyone I talked to is doing well and they love what they do. Every one of them said "If you work the system you will do well." I've operated as an owner/op booking my own freight before, although I was leased to a carrier solely for their authority - which is basically what Landstar is.
In my opinion, if you aren't successful at Landstar it's because you aren't managing your time or the loads you haul properly. It isn't easy but it takes determination and being smart about what you do (sometimes it means you do what nobody else will!). -

I get call all the time from agents " hay I see your going to be empty in xyz tomorrow. If you want I have a load going someplace that pays $$." I get calls like that 3-8 times a week...
