Glad you guys brought this up. I'm 5 weeks into the application process and they're just now asking for my CDL, medical card, and long form DOT physical, and no mention at all as to what the truck needs.

Guess I'll work on the 2290 when I get home to ransfer the title. Haven't been in 7 weeks anyway. At least I get to take the KW for a short trip this week. Running it from Ft. Lauterdale to Tampa on a moving permit so if things work out with landstar the truck is only an hour or so from a terminal without having to drive cross country out of pocket.

Before you pay the 2290, you may check to see if the former owner has a copy where he paid it. If so, then you may be able to take his copy to get your base plates.

The truck hasn't been a CMV for the last few years, so I doubt it. It might have even fallen under the 5,000 mile exemption last year, but I'll ask anyway.

Unfortunately all we have is the title and bill of sale the truck was out of service since 2010.

You don't need the title in order to pay the 2290. You will need the vin number. Unless the truck is on the road the first of the tax year, you pay a pro rated amount. The HUT tax year runs from July 1 through June 30. It comes out to about $45.83/month. I would wait to pay the tax until you are ready to buy your base plate and put it on the road. There is no reason to pay a tax until necessary. I would also suggest paying the tax at your local IRS office so that you can get a stamped receipt on the spot. It usually only takes me a few minutes to pay my 2290 and get the receipt.

You will need to have a copy of the title or bill of sale and 2290 when you apply for your base plate.

So jan 1 you don't need to pay the 2290? We will go ahead and finish the paperwork as planned then when we get approved by them ill and are ready to get the base plates through them ill go down and pay the hut and send it to landstar so they can get the plates. I can run it around idaho with a temp registration to get the truck the annual from the t/a in boise. Just have to establish some basic ins to cover me while the truck is being prepared I just have to figure out the problem with the heater, replace a toggle for the jake brake and change out the turn signals on the fenders and a couple of side marker lights, I got all the parts plus I have 3to spare tires for it already.

I was talking to OOIDA back when I was working to lease onto a different company a while ago, and they offer a 10 day pre-lease insurance for about $75. Beyond that, they offer temporary insurance coverage for a few hundred a week.

Don't say that too loud... Last I knew, Landstar was not a fan. Could be wrong but that's what I've heard from other drivers.
