I can say if you are trying to live off of the load board at Landstar it's tough. 45k is pretty standard for a flatbed load and has been for years. There are good and bad loads here just like anywhere else. Like I said before, it's not for everyone.

Actully 45,000 has not been the std for yrs.In the 4.5 yrs I have had my step I have never hauled that kinda weight. When I was at mercer the yearly avg weight hauled was 32,000lbs at landstar I never really hauled more than 40,000lbs.It has been for yrs the heavier the load the less you make unless you are working a tonnage haul.
I did not live off the load board I had agent I worked for on a reg basis I only used the board as a filler till the econ droped and the agent were losing loads to other companies cutting the rates.
Most my stuff was $2.75-$7.00 per mile till the econ died and the oilfield died.Bring back the high fuel price so my oilfield stuff comes back.

The big difference between landstar and Mercer is landstar has alot more mouths to feed up and down the food chain, I have never seen a company with so many non-drivers working for them and the agents are completley left alone letting them take as much profit as they can from the loads, Mercer has less overhead, better brokers and better customers, My opinion anyway

The paperwork at Landstar(logs) will drive you crazy. They know nothing about driving a truck and what they mark as violations the DOT find nothing wrong! It's our job to please the DOT not Landstar. Landstar does not fine us like the DOT. Two DOT log related events. First was 70 hour violation. I hit 70 at the scale but had to go back to a truckstop due to lack of room at the scale. I missed calculated what time I had left for the day. The second was bad, not even starting the day, but was not fined by the DOT because I explained the situation and he believed me. This was California DOT. I was repeatedly badgered by Landstar on why I wasn't fined? How should I know? Ask the officer! Loads were sometimes good and bad. Remember the bad agents. It was great fun with them and the BCO's I met were great!

I was Lucky but Landstar suspended me for 6 months and I'm having a hard time finding a job right now. Most companies are not hiring out of Michigan right now.

it is once you get to know the system. find an agent that treats you well and work with them. i know a few good agents in the system. i don't pull a van but those agents keep you busy with decent rates most of the time. they do have a good crew of people. try lmc out of longmont,co. stan will treat you right. bill up in ant is good with ltl.
