Depends on the agent you work for. What agent did she recommend? They are really fussy on the log book. Dot will tell you that there is no problem with your logs but Landstar will. Fought way too much with them on this issue. Most agents are good to haul for but there are some bad ones as well. Just depends on the pay, equipment, and benefits that they offer you.

This is my first time here and saw some say how much they did not like Landstar. I have been with Landstar for ten years. Most years have been great and a few have been poor. Things are poor now as the economy is down and that means fewer loads for alot of trucks. At Landstar you only get what you put into it. No one holds your hand. Just like truckers there are good and poor agents. I worked with one agent for about four years and did very well. Things changed and now I work with another one and have so ok but also have been home more.
Landstar is not for everyone. You have to know what you are doing and keep your logs right.

I've been with them for over 2 yrs and for the last 6 months I haven't made more than 95 cpm including FSC,hauling heavy hazmat loads. When home in FL can't do nothing but sitting in my computer trying to get a descent load.Right now whoever can go with a paid by the mile company will be better;let'em worry about low rates.

I am thinking about buying my own dry van. Does anyone know if there is an age limit on your trailer or does it just have to be in good shape/

Why? You do not need a dry van over there. You can have one but you will not do any better there it will actully hurt you because they do so much drop and hook.
Most the people over there with there own van are working some dedicated runs with agents they reg. work with.
The only way you want a trailer over at landstar is if you buy a platform.

I was leased to Landstar a few years ago, I actually had two trucks on with them. I did fairly well pulling a Van. But automotive was booming at the time.
I did freak out their log department..it was kinda funny. I bought both of my Tractors out of Canada an imported them to the US. It was kind of a pain in the arse, but it was worth it in the end. I bought the first on and it only took 4 weeks to do the importation. But the second one took 8 weeks. So in the mean time I jumped into a Canadian registered truck ( I am from the US) and while my driver was running the first truck... I just horded all of my paper work until I was in the second truck, because with it being of Canadian registration..I knew Landstar would flip. Anyway once I got into my second truck I turned in all that paperwork I was hording, about 7 weeks worth...the log dept turned off my fuel card until I explained why my logs did not match my fuel purchases.. hehe that where actually from the first truck being driven by my driver, and the thought I was still in that truck. But once I explained it all to them, they were cool about it.
I did not use their load board much, I worked directly with certain agents and this is really the only way to make decent revenue with Landstar.
Most of the people that complain about Landstar, it is really 2 reasons, first they do not understand how to dispatch themselves..as they have always been lead and not done it for themselves before getting there. The second reason they rely on the load board ...nope can't do that load boards whether it is Landstar's or anyone else always has the cheapest freight.
Landstar does have a great system, the only negative I have with landstar is the percentage rate 65% of 98% is not very good, and you can do much better at other companies, as far as pay goes...but all things considered I would not hesitate to lease with Landstar. I would try and stay away from Van and stay away from the load board as much as possible.
