This is too funny! I have NO complaints with LS. Hello I just hauled a load from Texas to Alberta. You say it does not pay, but it paid me to deadhead all the way home and still make 2 dollars per mile for all miles! Just because you had a bad time with them does not mean everyone does. And for being home every night, well if that is what you want more power to you brother. I will keep the wife in the truck with me and keep making some money.
Oh and the agents I have dealt with some are not worth the phone call, but the ones we haul for regularly are top notch and above board
just my 2 centsstarsonwindow and russellkanning Thank this. -
question why would you dh all the way home? just wondering
BSD Thanks this. -
Some people do well with Landstar and others won't do well at all. There are some agents who do double broker freight, just as many other carriers and brokers will do. Most big carriers have direct freight with their own shippers. Landstar is no exception. Where some people get into trouble with Landstar is that you are responsible for your own success. There are no dispatchers to find your freight. It is all on your back. They provide the tools, such as insurance, freight, etc., You must find a way to make it all work. Not everyone is a self starter. Some people will do much better working with a carrier that has dispatchers to keep their owner operators moving. Leasing to Landstar is similar to running your own authority. When you lease to Landstar you are limited to using their agents, for the most part. That can work against you at times and for you at other times. I have known some who failed with Landstar. When I leased to them I did well for the times. I also have friends who have done well leased to Landstar.
I understand that you would like to keep all the revenue and not give any to the carrier. Keep in mind that the revenue you give to the carrier goes to pay for insurance, drug testing, compliance and to cover overhead and other expenses. It also allows them to keep some of the profits. I have always preferred to run my own authority. I can usually do better on my own than leasing to another carrier. Someone must pay for all the overhead and write the checks. You can get your own authority and pay those costs yourself or lease to a carrier who will pay for all those costs. One reason to lease to a carrier is so that they can front your costs to get started. Some people are just not good managers.
You can find very cheap rates with some agents at Landstar. There are also some agents who have good paying loads. Landstar won't hold your hand to help you find those agents, but they can point you in the right direction. Again, it is up to you as an owner operator to sort through all the bad agents who have cheap freight and find the good ones. Landstar doesn't work for every owner operator. There are other carriers that might work better for some people. There are also some who should sell their truck and find a company job.Last edited: Apr 7, 2012

A little inside info. I had a van load on the same lane paying $3.71 a mile. Couldn't find any of our drivers with 200 miles that wanted to take it.scottied67 Thanks this.

I am not advocating anything. I just believe in taking responsibility for one's decisions. I own 50 trucks and there are loads that I hate to take, but sometimes it is the best decision. When I accept a poor rate, I acknowledge that I am "part of the problem." My strategies make sure that the lights remain on and the mortgages paid for 50 families. I'm not a child either.
