There is no such thing as a "fast lane" in calif... What the the law says is slower traffic stay to the right..I like to get in the 4 wheeler and do the posted post speed limit which is 70 max and I will get harassed for going to slow
. I refuse to move over to the left lane(except for trucks) when cars are merging from ramps. Despite horns and "I'm # 1 gestures", it's just better that way.
this, a thousand times this. They will magically discover the gas pedal when they are all of a sudden out of road/driving on the shoulder. If you do move over now they will just sit there and no one will let you back in.

The right thing to do, whether you are in the merging lane or the 2nd from the right, is to stay steady and predictable. If you are in the merging lane maintaining speed and letting the oncoming traffic speed up or slow down to merge around you is usually the best option, although if a line of vehicles is merging I'll slow to a speed that makes it safer for them to make that decision.

Schools and companies train you that when you are in a multilane freeway you should get into the 2nd lane from the right and stay there, to avoid making lane changes as much as possible. The bottom line is that you need to maintain plenty of space in front of you. It doesn't matter if you are in the merging lane or the 2nd lane over, leave plenty of following distance. Many's the time I see a row of trucks, all tailgating each other, forming a WALL of trucks that is blocking passenger vehicles from merging over into the fast lane or merging from the fast lane over to make an exit.

Blocking vehicles from being able to merge means that the good driver of a car that is going the legal speed HAS TO slow and merge between a limited space between trucks. Guess what!? That means the car is "cutting you off" and then "brake checking" you!

Well duh! How else do you think they are going to get to their exit through the 1/2 mile wall of trucks?

MAKE SPACE for merging. It's amazing how if you make that space passenger vehicles are easily able to USE the space you GAVE them to safely merge back and forth. No brake checking, simply merging.

As an old salt trucker once said to another trucker that was complaining about getting "cut off" all the time, "You show me a trucker that's getting cut off all the time, and I'll show you a trucker that's tailgating all the time".

Your letting our true personality show. People want to know whats wrong with trucking, well this is it. We all need to give and take, you can not expect another driver to sit behind a slower truck no more than you would. If you really drive the truck you think you do, you should not have a problem assisting another. Be would like them to learn to use there mirrors and make sure they have room to pass before they pull out, bit we all miss judge somewhere sometime, when it happens show a little respect and help them out of a bad situation.

When it comes to on ramps ,law is they are to merge into the main flow of traffic ,I'll get over if i can just to show some common curtisey ,if i can't then ....they must merge , i have had people hang out on the side of my trl until they run out of on ramp for reasons unknown ....then act like i did something wrong to them , i guess some people just get it ....it's real simple tho ,speed up or slow down to merge in ,the main highway has the right of way ,to avoid this situation in the city traffic ill take the middle lane ,just make sure you're doing the speed limit ....safety first

Hi super, I've always made sure I do what I can to let a truck in, because I'd hope someone else would do the same for me, but I've watched drivers of 4 wheelers on entrance ramps, and when I'm merging, I'll look way before I actually get to the main highway, pick a spot and go for it, where most don't even look until they are running out of ramp, then all of a sudden, OMG there's a truck right there, and I'll be darned if I'm going to risk moving over and get hung out to dry when nobody will let you back, including the person you just let in , in the 1st place. And you are right, they have to yield to you, something most 4 wheelers don't understand. I remember years ago, there used to be yield signs at the bottom of entrance ramps, I wonder why they did away with those.

OK, I guess I'll get on my soapbox for a minute. This is my opinion, People. As truck drivers, we're suppose to be a step above 4 wheelers. I mean, we drive these monster vehicles around, we can turn on a dime, park them just about anywhere, and 4 wheelers look up to us, right ? When you're driving down the highway and a 4 wheeler comes along side you, you look down and the passenger is looking UP at you, right ? We've had professional training, drive 10 times as many miles as a 4 wheeler does EVERYDAY, so lets project a good image. Yes, we have to be somewhere, no, we're not just cruising around for a Sunday drive, BUT, it's called sharing the road. When I was an instructor, I told my students I wanted them to do one courteous gesture everyday when driving. That could be letting someone merge in front of you, or, letting someone out from a driveway onto a busy street. Anything that involved giving up your right of way and giving them the right of way. I say this because, it's not about you, it's about us. We're all just plain folks plugging along on our daily "journey". You don't know if the person next to you just got word their mother died, or, they just got fired or wifey served him with divorce papers. Trust me…..you WILL get to your destination. Just do it without running over someone.

My two biggest problems. I drive Chicago only, trucks are only allowed in the two right lanes.

So either I am in the merge lane and all it's problems. Or I am in the second lane doing the speed limit and upsetting all the rambos that have to run at least 10-20 mph over to make any money.
