Don they are still putting out good products, as far as a base system I would go with Toshiba or Acer based on personal experience. If I was going to put together a more graphic intensive gaming machine I would go with DELL for a recognized machine, or if I had the money I would go with VOODOO. Dell bought out AlienWare a while back and they have used what was going on with gaming systems to enhance their normal systems.

    Post-Thought

As I mentioned earlier the XPS1600 series by DELL was ####. They built the system too powerful for the size of it, this increased the residual heat from the components as it didn't allow enough air movement.

For gaming you would really do better to stick with platform (xbox/playstation). While they do have some great games on PC the big single player games are crossovers (ports) that are designed for pc later like an afterthought. For basic computing and reliability Acers are definately worth the money.

Thanks lw. Yeah, I'm a pretty "basic" kind of guy. Particularly when it comes to computers. I don't need a lot of fancy stuff, so I've been happy with this machine.

It served me very will with a Verizon air card when I was OTR. Actually that is why I bought a laptop instead of a new desk top model. I am giving serious consideration into getting a new desk top soon.

But needs are still pretty basic. Microsoft or Word Perfect Office, Photos, Internet, GPS maps, Ham radio programs. I don't do any gaming.

My current system is a HP Pavillion dv6700. For basic browsing and price it's definately a great buy. I'm not a fan of HP, but I needed a system quick when I wasn't sure what the problem was with my Toshiba. Earlier today I setup a hacked copy of SR2 on it, and while the graphics show great the play is extremely choppy. This lead me to doing research on platform gaming on PC and almost every game I enjoy gets the same negative kind of reviews. The graphics may look great, but the gameplay is choppy at best. The market for gaming is with the actual platform systems, making PC games just an afterthought unfortunately.

Whats is the meaning of the term "net book". May I ask is it the same as "notebook or "laptop"? New term for me.

Netbooks are essentially a modded down version of the laptop. They usually have less computing power and are actually built for only basic applications. While there are some which have been tweaked for slightly better performance I wouldn't waste my money on them.

The thing to remember with computers is that things get outdated quickly, this is why it is better to buy the best system, you can afford (quality or quantity is your choice). With a desktop (especially if you like building them yourself) there are a ton of system components which can be upgraded, where you are essentially stuck with whichever system you bought on laptops. Right now processing power is really a steadily increasing market, and as processors are improved new software will become available which means that systems which already became outdated too fast, may become outdated even quicker.

Anytime, I am still trying to learn more as I go so there is always (especially with computers) that what I have read or experienced may be corrected or outdated information. I've built 2 desktops and 1 laptop, the laptop was a complete disaster and I sold it before it went bad. The next 1 I want to build is a liquid cooled desktop, but there's honestly no reason to other than the "want to" lol.

I am currently running an Acer in the truck that I bought 2 years ago for $400 from Walmart. It does everything I need it to. I run MS streets and trips, have a laptop stand and it has held up well to the bumps in the truck. There have been some big ones. About a month ago I noticed a crack in the corner of the case. I believe it was caused by a rough road. It still works great. I just bought my son one from Best Buy for Christmas. 160 G hard drive, dual core processor 3g ram and windows 7.... $370. I will never buy the high end system. Last years technology works fine for me.
