acer is ok,but toshiba, asus & 1 other brand are the top dogs in the game. if u go to cnet.com or 1 of the consumer product review websites and they can break it down for u. i just bought the asus 1005ha,only because the 1008 doesn't have a removeable battery. if you're buying a netbook,go with asus, toshiba,or hp.

An overlooked company is Lenovo. Formerly IBM products.

Netbooks are smaller units. usually have a screen size from 9 to 12 inches. No optical drive (cd/dvd) Internal storage can be solid state or disk drive, memory 2GB or less, usually 1 GB. most are around 2 lbs.

They are very good for a number of things. E-mail, web and general use applications like office. I guess if you wanted to you could try running autocad on it, no reason it should not run.

Acer is one of the oldest and largest PC board manufacturers. You may not know their name as a product, but chances are you have had a PC with a board made by Acer. They contract to a number of companies.

As I said in a previous post this HP is doing quite well for me. Luckily it's running an AMD processor (Turion 64bit). I am not a big fan of HP from past experience, but this system seems to be pretty solid. I just need better antivirus due to the number of hacks I work with.

I have a AMD in my HP
    Talk about running hot
When I bought my Toshiba I made sure it didn't have the AMD
Now I didn't have any problems but its one of the biggest complaints with HP's

I wanted to get something in the spring. My oldest boy is going to start playing baseball and my husband was upset because he would not be there...I thought maybe two notebooks so I could use a webcam so he could essentially "Be at" every game or practice....

is this possible wih a cheap model, cause we would need two...

    Thanks!

Bunny it is POSSIBLE, but not probable. From my experience with webcams the picture quality is spotty at best, and they are made for closeup rather than distance. There may be some higher end cams. There is also the possibility of using a regular camera, and connecting it directly to the PC (I haven't dealt with it so in theory it should work but I have no practical knowledge). If you solve the solution of camera quality, then the pricing of 2 laptop units is going to be basically whatever you choose to buy, then possibly a wireless network card for times when wireless signal isn't available due to location of games, or location of your husband. I am sorry I couldn't be more help, but sites I would recommend for research are newegg.com, download.comcnet), and bestuy (both the store and the site)

BAACK ADM processors will run slightly hotter than an INTEL celeron processor, however, I trust them and so far the trust has been well founded. Even when running my system overclocked for higher performance (supposed to be shorter component life but 3 years with previous system...) the heat hasn't caused any problems other than discomfort on legs when I am wearing shorts or sleeping pants. Running hot is BAD for computers obviously since the heat well hurt the hardware components, but the components are also meant to handle a certain degree of heat. One other thing to remember about laptops is the size of the casing (housing for the hardware) is relative to the amount of heat, a more compact casing won't allow the heat to dissipate as well as needed.

I'm not going to sift through four pages to check if someone already stated this but...

Notebooks and Laptops are the same thing. It's simply up to the manufacturer what they want to call them.

However, the smaller ones without optical drives and smaller screens are called *Net*books. They are called this as their primary function is to get you onto the Internet. They are just fine for watching Hulu, YouTube or other downloaded video. What they are not good for is gaming. Their biggest advantage over a Notebook/Laptop is price. You can expect to spend at least half of what you would for a full size Laptop.

I own a wonderful high powered laptop, the Toshiba Qosmio Q505-880 but the 19 inch full HD screen as well as the $2000. price tag has me thinking its not to smart taking it into a truck!. Netbooks work just fine for E Mail and web surfing as well as chatting when on the road. my netbook weighs only 2 pounds, costs under $200. my high powered laptop weighs 13 pounds!. also the battery in my netbook lasts more then 6 hours! I think netbooks with 10-11 inch screens are just fine for keeping in touch. also if someone takes it from you you are not out a lot of money. Additionally with the new "CLOUD" computing such as Google Chrome a powerful CPU or massive hard drive storage isn't always a must!

Old thread, but glad to see somebody "revived" or "bumped" it!:yes2557:

This is a very good point. When you are on the road, just about anything can happen. Of course, if someone just tries to take it, then they just might be out a hand and arm or two.:biggrin_25525:

Seriously though, if you can get by without taking anything that is terribly expensive in the truck, you will be much better off.
