There's two train of thoughts here. IBM (Bought by Lenovo) are mostly business computers (workstations), less cutting edge and usually older but proven technology.

Now there are multi-media computers that are more cutting-edge, expensive and less robust than their business counterparts, but do offer more performance in terms of computing speed, multi-media capability as well as games. :)

If you are a basic internet users just checking emails, forums blogs etc. then go for the cheaper and usually more robust business computers. If you like games, music, games, videos, multi-media, games... oh did I say games? :) Then go for the Laptops which are slightly more frigile but offer better performance.

Now their's another type of laptops which are called tough-books. Panasonic makes them and they are very rugged and will outlast a business laptop anytime. But they are also very slow, small as well as heavy. Dell has a brand of toughbooks that target this type of market, other manufacturers are on their way too. :)

I think for basic trucking purposes who just want to surf the net, check email, as well as participate in forums, a good business laptop would be the best bet.

But if you want to edit movies, pictures, play games, watch movies as well as TV, then go for the consumer laptops.

If your work makes requires you to go on a field with harsh environment such as mining contractors etc. then go with a Panasonic toughbook. :)

Oh yeah, most of the components inside these notebook are bought from other manufacturers. Mostly subcontract the case and sometimes the motherboard, but everything else are just bought from other manufacturers as well and installed by the computer company. Some would by Intel over AMD, and some would choose nVidia over ATI. Same goes with RAM (Kinston, Crucial etc.). But in the end the computer manufacturers don't make each component. They are bought.

If anyone is looking for a high performance laptop, take a look at Alienware

Yup Alienware is awesome! Other gaming laptops would be voodoo pc. though I like the look of the alienware alx system better than voodoo. :)

Dell also has the XPS system that has the nVidia 7950 video card installed, however they don't have SLi option (2 video cards working as one) unlike alienware. :)

BTW did you know that Alienware was recently bought by Dell? :biggrin_25523:

I was unaware of that. I had a college kid for summer help a few years ago and he had just got an Alienware laptop, it was pretty cool looking, I've never actually worked on one though.

Me too. They're just too expensive especially if you maxed out all the option on their website. I bet the ALX notebook would outperform my desktop computer back home.

Even one of those nVidia GeForce 7950 GTX would outperform my mid-spec video card in my desktop, what more if you have two of them? WOW! Though theoretically speaking, 2 video card doesn't mean twice the performance. Maybe a 20-30% performance gain as compared to using just one video card.

I'm not sure how they keep everything cool with such little space and using lots of power at the same time.

Anyway, going back to Alienware being bought by Dell, I did a search and I found one nice article:

    http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=30289

And to answer one question there, Dell does have an AMD processor on at least one of their desktops. The Dimension 521 that was being sold last year, has an AMD processor. Now the Dimensions are being replaced with desktop Inspiron 531. :)

My (NEW) Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop has an AMD 64 Athlon 1.64 Core Duo.
I am more than happy with it.

My wife and I bought a Dell Inspiron 6000 about a year and a half ago and have never had a problem with it except for a damaged power cord (our fault). While I woudnt spend alot of money on a Dell Desktop... their laptops are as good as any out there unless your wanting a serious gaming laptop.

Dell also has the XPS which is targeting gamers as well. If you have to choose between the same hardware & OS configurations between Alienware and Dell, I would go with Dell simply because of their Tech-support is second to none.

*Yes I still have an HP Laptop, it's working great still, haven't had any problems with it. But my next laptop would be a Dell that's for sure.
