You do more with your laptop than most of us do? Unless you are out there actually hacking websites, or releasing private photos from the ICloud, I don't you do more than me. But whatever, everything you've said in this entire thread is null to me and everyone I know that works on computers. This is the ultimate face palm thread if there ever is one.

Ok I gotta know, since you say you do more then most, I got to know what makes your laptop so special that you get attacked from viruses more than most people? Why are you suck a target? You say you don't use your laptop for personal business such as accounts, so what other reason could there be for you to get attacked?snowwy Thanks this.

Some common items I see a lot when I remote into computers...
Registry errors most of the time are not true errors. They are parts of programs that are left hanging. I have never seen an un-installer remove 100% of what it installed.
CC Cleaner - free - run once a week on the cleaner and registry tabs. You can play with it and keep "smart" cookies to sites you need.
IE - cog/internet options/browsing history/delete - if you save pw's, then uncheck that one - do weekly. You would be surprised how much this will slow a computer down. The idea was to keep a "screenshot" of a website, and when you visit again, only download the frames that are new. Would save bandwidth on revisiting sites. But, keep doing this and you have a big closet full of websites that will drag your computer down.
Run/msconfig/startup - unclick the items you don't need at start up time. Most of them will load when you need them anyway. Will speed bootup.
Poker sites will push a lot of garbage to your computer. It took me 2 days to clean one off and find the IP's of them and block them in IE.
FaceBook will push a lot of stuff to your computer.
Watch when you download programs as the "new" fad is to push the download of other programs on the install screens. The install button will be highlighted, but the decline will be grayed out... on installs read each screen and hit the correct button.
Install programs - hit custom and unclick what you do not want to install. If you click on auto then they hide a force on the browser or add toolbars.
A lot of installs will toss a toolbar on your browser. Delete them out under programs and features/uninstall a program.
Programs and features/uninstall a program - look down this monthly and uninstall what you did not install. If not sure Google it.
Games sites can/will push stuff to your computer.
Most programs will push a shortcut to your desktop. If you need the shortcut pin it to your taskbar and delete off the desktop along with the ones you don't need.. this will clean up your screen.
Look at what memory your computer has and what it can be bumped up too. More memory will help programs run faster.
Cog/manage add-ons - Search Providers - pick the one you want default and remove the rest.daf105paccar Thanks this. -
Speaking of browsers, I bypass IE, no thanks. Crome was ok until adware was installed and I couldn't get rid of it, you know those keywords that turn into ad links and popups on every page your on. Happened in firefox too but at least firefox allows the user in

Get yourself a good Linux or Unix operating system if you want stability and no viruses. While you are at it read the source code and learn how to hack.

i download crap. LOTS of it.
like i said in a earlier post. software to unroot and return my phone to stock form. it's not old. but it hasn't been sold for awhile. which means all the techies that cook roms for phones. have moved on to newer models. it's a beach to find my stock rom. (the latest or any version for that matter).
you do a google for the rom for my phone. and you gets lots of links to download. there's basically 3 different files, they are all the same. on different websights. and all come with a virus. i spent the last 2 days in the motel (truck is in the shop) before getting a valid non virus rom.
i look for FREE software that i don't want to pay for as i don't use that much. for various things i may want to do on any given day.
one time i made a server to send video to my dad when he lived 1700 miles away. lots of crap software before i finally got something to happen.
i do things in general. things that most people don't do. i do downloads. and unfortunately viruses come with.
i also have friends and family that from time to time want to do something. and have no clue where to look. and really don't want to spend money if they can get it for free.
when windows 95 first came out i had no clue as to why signs were posted advertising windows is here. wasn't till 97 before i figured it out.
i bought my first computer in 97. from a computer shop. it was pretty expensive too for a low model machine. took it back time and time again becuase it wouldn't dial out. (modem). then it wouldn't surf the net once it dialed out. they replaced parts and fixed whatever else. later i met a lady nerd who just happened to live a couple of blocks from me. she spent an entire day trying to get it to dial out. she ended up wiping and reinstalling 95. and all was golden. for awhile. had a friend come out the next time as she moved. and he taught me how to format and reinstall. it's how i've done things since..
i'm not an IT tech, i don't deal with corporate computers. but for the home use. it just make sense to do what i do. it's so much easier and faster then trying to do repairs and hoping things work out. i've done the repair thing many times, i've seen many computes sent in for repairs many times. i've seen many computers bought and get no windows cd or drivers to go with their newly built systems. i don't know how that works out, considering there's an activation now that only allows one computer. one would think they'd get the windows cd and license key to go with their $1000 newly built machine. much like manufactures do.
i've seen how registries get changed from programs being installed and worse when they get uninstalled. i've seen registries get deleted from programs. i've seen windows go completely out of whack from viruses and what not. windows get damaged from any number of reasons. sooner or later. your faced with the blue screen of death and a non bootable computer. not so much these days. but things do and will screw around with windows files.
viruses, trojans, and malware aren't the only things that screw windows up. programs do it too. windows 7 and later, however, are now built with a safety wall. to keep programs from rewriting windows registries. supposedly windows is now locked down. least that was the interview i heard on cnbc before 7 was released. from some software cheif of development for windows.
you've got websights, facebook is harmless, but what about all the stupid games people are playing on that sight!!!!!!!
you've been around the block, i've been around the block, you do things your way, i do things my way. neither of us is right or wrong. we just simply do things differently.
i download crap. therefore i'm a virus magnet. i don't click on emails, but i do click on weblinks, WHEN it supposed to take me to what i'm looking for.
to me, it's just soooooooooooooo much easier to just wipe and install. i'm freshly installed and starting over from scratch again. and it only takes me an hour.
my machines do more then just surf the internet, they're guinea pigs for whatever project my mind drums up. or something i may need to do. like my cell phones for instance.
I DOWNLOAD. that's what makes me prone to viruses. i install, that also makes me prone to windows errors. AVG does a pretty good job at keeping things where they belong. but it's not perfect. like everything else. specially if it has to be disabled, just to flash a cell phone.
this last one not only got my system, but it also got my recovery. if i do a fresh installation, and load avg right off the bat. 8 viruses. and they can't be found in the recovery. so now i've got a infected recovery. right now, i can't do a fresh installation without installing 8 viruses.Last edited: Sep 15, 2014

gotta love it when you try to download a file that's appropriately named what your looking for, only to find out it's something different. and it's usually some ilivid download manager.
