not really, if none of them can protect against everything. that means your going to get hit. no matter what.

me, personally, don't even worry about it. cuz you can't get rid of the darn things. they can be quaurantined. but your system is already ruined.

it's not uncommon for me to do a complete wipe and restore on average of 3 times a year. isn't nothing but a thing for me. but when i do use antivirus. i use AVG. the free edition. it doesn't require much processor or memory usage. which means it won't slow you down, unlike norton and mcaffee.

Thats the funny thing about antivirus, they can only find things that they already know about. When something new comes out it has free rein unless people find out something is wrong from their firewall. Be careful what you click on, it's a jungle out there.

Why do a full wipe? if you are able to do anything in the way of correct pc maintenance then there is no reason to do a full wipe. Ive had my home pc going now for 4 years without a wipe. I recently installed a new SSD not more than 6 months ago, still boots from the power button press in less than 25 seconds.

the entire world surfs facebook and cl. if they were that susceptible to viruses. i don't think the entire world would be surfing them sights anymore. and we would hear about them all the time on the news.

not saying it can't happen. but facebook is pretty good about security. can't swear about cl. but i've had no problems with it. and my laptop HAs NO virus software. not that i do much surfing with it. it's my OTR machine for logs and what not. so it don't do much surfing.

i have a new laptop. yes it has windows 8.1. and yes IT SUCKS to the max. i've had to resort to google for everything i want it to do. WHO THE HECK WANTS THE SCREEN TO BOOT UP TO SOME STUPID WALL WITH A BUNCH OF ICONS I'LL NEVER USE. or click the down arrow just to get a menu screen, again with a bunch of crap i'll never use. i've had to download a video player so i can watch dvd's. msft no longer supports video playback. unless you spend another $100 for some media pack. which don't seem to be compatible with us home users. my printer takes an act of congress now to print up my logs. my cell phone. won't maintain a connection with the operating system.

tonight, while i'm bored. i'll be surfing google for instructions. as apparently the bios needs to be reworked to allow an installation of windows 7. msft seems heck bent and intent on transforming the world to their new crap. and their 9, which is coming out next month. won't be any better.

AVG has a free download from their website, there is no need to purchase unless you run a full office and are under constant attack from viruses. The everyday user can get away with a standard version just fine.

you can do all the pc maintance you want. you WON'T be able to fix every single file in the windows operating system. nor, will you be able to rewrite those files. but hey, it's your time to do what you can.

most people in the world don't use their pc's much. or for much use. and really have no idea how messed up their pc's really are. untill they try a program that just won't work.

i like my pc running 100%. i don't screw around trying to fix things. nor will i even try. not that i can anyways. becuase i have no clue how windows was constructed or written. if i have so much as one program that don't work right. if i have so much as one little glitch. wipe and restore. takes me 30 minutes to have a brand new pc with a fresh operating system. that's better then trying to screw around with things that will never get fixed.

but as for your correct pc maintanance. there's no such thing. everything you do, everything you install. REWRITES windows. becuase they all think they know how windows should perform, operate, and how windows should have been written. correct pc maintanance does absolutely nothing but more harm.

the whole idea of windows vista, was to keep software vendors from rewriting windows files. which was the biggest root of windows problems in the early days. but apparently, they've learned new tricks since.

correct pc maint. do you have any idea what correct pc maint would be. cuz even msft can't figure it out. now, if your talking about making a pc useable to the average jo blow who does nothign with their machines anyways. by all means. help them out. it's what i used to do. but not any more.

i go for the complete start from scratch, with a fresh windows. i don't spend so much time working on theirs, or my machine.
it's really aggravating. that most home users are still using dialup internet speeds. with today's big files.

wipe, reload, and be done. they can finish loading their own programs back up.

With my laptop fresh out of the box I load it and set it up with anything and every thing I want. Then recreated as an image on disc.
I have a ghost program in case it all goes down the drain i just load that sucker and leave it over night reinstating all OS, programs and settings the way I like it.
