I know the thread is old, and I don't know if I said it before, but, Wlidkat, my hat's off to you. Too bad I won't have the chance to run up there with you. I'd follow you in a minute. That's about all I haven't done where driving in the north is concerned. I've done narrow, windy, steep and almost nonexistent, but I never got the chance to drive the ice roads. Darn mine in Dease Lake closed before I got the chance.

    Thanks for sharing!

Wildkat u are something, i have to tell my boy to get his butt on here and find this thread. he would love to do the ice road thing from yellowknife on then go and do the bering straight trip, and if were to actually get hired i'd come stay the season with him so he could do it. hell i'd prob go with him so we could both say yea we were there and we ran the ice. is there any chance you might give me some advice from an ice road trucker that i could give him that would help him with a chance at getting hired on??

As far as I know, you have to be a Canadian Citizen to get a job on that, from what I understand they aren't allowed to hire foreign drivers, and most of the reputable companies have the same drivers that come back year after year, and the ones that I know have 10+ years experience just with the Ice Roads. Of course there are "some" very disreputable companies...like on that stupid show who will hire any moron out there, but usually they get themselves banned pretty quickly.

Are the diamond mines shutting down/cutting back going to affect you?

It hasn't so far... but then I don't haul fuel, & that'[s going to be the major cutback. I haven't heard that they are shutting down, but I have heard that they are cutting back to one shift & that will hurt the fuel haulers. I also run the Yukon where there are new mines opening & I also haul a fair amount of groceries & no matter how bad things get you still gotta eat!

I read on the CBC web site the other night DeBeers was cutting back the work force. Basically everybody was going to have a layoff but they would still get regular cheques for 12 months but at a lesser amount. It also mentioned some were shutting down altogether.

Have you heard if the diamond mines are still in production and development in Northern Sasketchewan?

I was toying with the idea of going to work at the new mines at Atlin or Iskut but they are both on hold.
