Used to haul steel for a metal and fabrication company, mostly over size out of the plant and some up to 18 feet wide frames for cooling towers.
We had a chiller frame going on a tall building down town D.C. 18 feet wide and 45 feet long. Rigged it in the building and set it on the trailer with different angles of chain and straps since we did not want to bend it during transport.
Shorten the story up, we ended hauling that same frame back and forth 5 times since we could not navigate the alley way and the general contractor was a idiot.
We are talking time and material, one tractor with trailer, permits, two chasers and the erection crew. Each and every time.
Laughable Loads.

Need some flags on that I think? LOL -
Delivered a load of Owens-Corning insulation in Lubbock and went to Rip Griffin's for a shower. (It's the T/A today). Upstairs in the phone room I'm on hold to dispatch to tell them I'm empty and ready for a new load.
An older driver keeps dialing a phone number, laughing- and hanging up. Once, twice, three times..
Well, JB Hunt used to have us on hold for a half hour to an hour at a time (it was the '80's and all business was done on the phone). So I asked him what was so funny.
He tells me he delivered a load of cedar fenceposts to a ranch in the country. He meets the rancher and the man's about as rude as he could have been to the driver. They get into an argument about unloading the fenceposts- the rancher wants them "stacked neatly- right over here". The argument ended at about eleven thirty. The rancher grabbed the paperwork- SIGNED IT- and told the driver "those fenceposts better be unloaded when I get back after lunch!"
Now the driver is laughing so hard he can hardly tell me that he pulled the fenceposts off his flatbed with a chain wrapped around a mesquite tree. They ended up in a messy heap on the ground right inside the gate. He asks me what time it is- and it's about 12:15.
The driver says "there's only one truckstop in town and I need a load NOW or I'm going to Amarillo and call brokers from there".SHC Thanks this. -

While back I had several AC units for a new Home Depot being built. For what ever reason the AC units were severely delayed as the store was dang near done being built. Grass had been planted, asphalt, concrete poured, even the lines on the parking lot had already been painted. The only crane tall enough to reach was in the shop for a long term over haul.
These poor guys had to hire St Louis helicopter to pull the AC units off my trailer and set them up top. I cant even fathom what that cost them. They got to pay them a 400 mile round trip from St Louis to Wichita Ks. -

Not as laughable but I did something similar last week in Salt Lake City. Had a large A/C unit for a high rise in downtown. They had me come into downtown at 1am. I pulled up on the street, heard the helicopter but couldn't see it. It's chains dropped down and they told me when they blew the whistle to grab gears. Apparently it was going on top of a 80 story building. Kinda neat
