leak from oil filter

noticed oil leaking from oil filter today... took filter off (kinda hard to get off) and found the gasket had been marred (sp?) up... thought filter was put on too tight... put new oil filter on... still leaks... ideas?

Needed to check the mating surface . If the seal was chewed up there could be something stuck up there?
