I have a truck with a Cummins Big Cam 3 that is leaking a fair amount from the rear of the pan as well as both sides about in the middle of the pan. I've tried retorqueing the bolts but that didn't help at all. I bought a new gasket which is thicker and supposed to help with pans that are leaking. I'm wondering if I should try the new gasket or just go ahead and replace the whole pan. Also, does anyone know the tightening sequence for the pan bolts? I've only been able to find one diagram online that shows a tightening sequence but it seems pretty obscure and since it's the only one I've found don't have much confidence in following it.

If you have an aluminum pan with the rear buttress used from 1948-mid way thru the BC 3 series I highly recommend NOT putting the 6 bolts in it to the clutch housing. The aluminum pans had cracking issues on the rear corners because of these bolts putting pressure on corners by pulling them away from engine block. In early 80’s Cummins sent out a bulletin to completely remove those bolts as a fix. Every old NH pan I’ve seen in a truck with those bolts still there are cracked. You sure it’s the pan gasket ? I thought I had a similar issue. So what I did was pressure wash the whole engine, started it up and kicked up the idle and let it run for a while. My leak that I thought was a pan gasket, ended up being oil leaking from the fuel pump gasket and running all over to the pan.

I always liked center outwards to the corners last for pans. Pull your pan down and check the condition for rot or flanges that are bent, warped or otherwise just poor condition. Those older pans are made of better steel than the newer stuff. If it looks good, just try a new gasket.
