His looking ahead BEFORE going to school will put him ahead of the game. Actually being able to drive any truck before starting orientation with a trucking company will put him in the winner's circle.

If you know someone with a 5 speed go sit in it and play with the pedals get your feet to work at different times and train you right arm to find the gears most companies run 10 speeds...so you have r 2 4 than flip the switch and HR 7 9
1 3 5 6 8 10
that just your most common tranny in a rig you still have 8 speeds 9 speeds super 10s 13 speed 15 speed and 18 speeds than if you find an old school truck you could have a 5x4 tranny pack or 6x4 pack or a 6 speed double speed rears...lol don't worry bout those though that's more O/o custom setups something a very few of us like to do to our rigs
I will say this once you learn to shift with the clutch learn to with out, once you learn to do it with out learn to do it with the jacks....I only clutch it to pull out. You can shift faster jack shifting and at times that speed will allow you to get up a hill faster or pull out on a hill and keep speeding up where with the clutch you might get 1 gear and have to hold out till it levels some and you can shift with the clutch....also I rarely use 1st most 2nd to pull out. if empty 3rd and depending on terrain sometime 2,3,4,5,6 even loaded....IE if I am sitting at a light loaded facing down a nice hill I will drop her into 5th or 6th when it turns green I will let off the brakes and let the load push me off the start and than let out the clutch and be rolling fine...different times call for different shifting -
So based on what y'all have said, it sounds like I don't really have anything to worry about

I had never driven any sort of manual transmission before learning to drive a truck, but the instructors told me that that was an advantage since I was starting with a clean slate. It took me a day or two so I caught on relatively quickly. I had an easier time learning it than a few other guys in my group, who had to 'unlearn' their previous stick-shift knowledge and constantly remind themselves that this was different from what they'd been doing their whole lives in their cars/pickups. So I imagine that it'll be easier for you because of the fact that you won't have to unlearn anything.
