    The biggest issue is that your depression is not my depression. At the end of my marriage, I was diagnosed with depression and medication snapped me out of it in a matter of days. As mentioned, there was “something wrong in the world”: MY WORLD. Once my world changed, as I changed it, the depression went its own way.

    Experiences like that make it easy to say “oh, just get over it, you can fix it”, but your depression is not my depression. Some cases are just the result of life events, death, divorce, job loss, isolation. Some are the result of a lack of sleep, lack of exercise, or too much screen time. And some we just don’t know.

    I’ve walked with people for whom a regular, strenuous, exercise routine and staying away from screens was enough to keep the monster away. One lady I know has to be outside, in the woods, daily or the clouds start coming in. I also know people that are on long term medication because they can’t keep the clouds away without it.

    Still, their depression is not your depression, and professional help is there to find a resolution to the problem, and a GOOD professional help will use medication to bring you back AND try to help you figure out how to manage your mental health. It’s unfortunate that there are many professionals that aren’t very good, and the comment by @Ridgeline about GP’s probably is related to one or more of those medical “parts replacers”. Buyer, beware.
