What a great friend you must be to "give" away a Connex 4600 Turbo.
Ok well to keep it short I'll cover the basics on the knobs found on a typical CB transceiver....
Squelch - Sets the threshhold where the "white noise" can be heard when no signal is present. You can set it up all the way to the right so only the guy 100 ft of you can reach you or you can just dial it back until you hear noise, then adjust so you don't. Your TX/RX meter will still show the strength of signal of white noise.
RF Gain - Adjusts how strong the incoming signal to a radio is. I usually run mine wide open. Some will use it like a squelch knob and turn it up so nothing but a really strong signal gets thru. Also on your TX/RX meter the semi strong signals will appear as weaker signals even though they're not.
Clarifier/Voice lock - used on SSB radios, adjusts the incoming person's voice by changing the frequency the radio receives on. Some people like to "unlock" the clarifier to allow their transmit (TX) and receive (RX) to track together.
Band switch (Exports) changes the band on which you transmit and receive. It should NEVER be changed to anything other than whatever band the CB band is on (will depend on make and model of radio) unless you fully are aware of the different frequencies and if you have a frequency counter. Reason being it should never be changed is because it can land you on the 10 meter amateur (ham) bands which are unauthorized for talking on by unlicensed people, plus some areas of the 10 meter band are non voice areas. On Connex radios, often the D band is the CB band, but a flip from D to E puts you on 28.025 mHz, which is a non voice area of the 10 meter band. In short, if you are caught by a ham or the FCC talking on this band and especially in the non voice area, you'll get a nice warning letter in the mail followed by a fine if you fail to comply.
E tone - controls echo.
I'm sure I missed a few but feel free to ask away if you're not sure....but hopefully I've shed some light on this.
