I haven't when through the process of getting my own numbers yet. That's why I posted this request for information on the topic so I can make an educated decision on the matter before hand.

Right, finding a niche is where to find good money. There's actually end dump/belly dump work in my area because of a large highway road construction project going on in my area that I'm looking into also. I guess that would be considered a niche.

Yes exactly if you’re good at talking you can find options.My brother-in-law has an older tanker he paid for his truck is paid for he pulls loads some kind of waste water from the water treatment plant in the town he lives in it goes to farmers hay fields he doesn’t travel farther the 50 miles from the plant usually makes 3 to $3500 a week and never burns more then a tank of fuel a week.My brother runs sand to concrete companies in the area with his dump trailer

54 days? That's new to me. Learn something every day. Looks like I'll be running only Texas for a bit also that's if I decide to grow a pair and do it all myself instead of leasing onto another carrier.

Well every business person has to decide what their strengths and weaknesses are. But you need to know what the paperwork is. It's not that hard. Once you get set up into a system it's no big deal. It does take a little bit of time but you should understand all the components to how your business operates. Everybody had to start from somewhere.

If you are going to get your own authority you really should be negotiating with Brokers yourself. Here's why.

First of all the negotiations are not negotiations to construct the space station. The word negotiation I think is kind of overused. Basically you figure out how much you need to get for the load and you call the broker. He's either going to give you that amount give you less than that or give you more than that. If you don't get at least that amount you call another broker. It's not nearly as difficult as you think. The broker asked you how much do you want for it you pick a number higher than you actually want he probably will give you a number lower than you actually want and you try to settle at least on what you actually want. There's not really a lot of hobnobbing and uber diplomacy and Slick words and magical incantations that will get you a higher rate. It's really more or less calling the right broker at the right time.

Which is exactly why you want to be the one calling. When you call the broker and you began asking him questions about the load, how often do you do this load? How often does it usually take for the truck to get unloaded? How long have you had this customer? How many loads do you do for them weekly? What is your detention and truck ordered not use policy? Among other things...

When you get a broker that starts to clear his throat or tell you the policy was recently changed he doesn't know what it is or he's in a hurry and tries to get you off the phone or tries to force you to book the load, you know to stay away you know that's a bad broker. If he takes the time to answer your questions and he does it in a calm deliberate intelligent way, most likely if you have a problem he will help you or at least you're inclined to believe that.

When someone else books your loads all you have is an address to go to. You have no idea about their broker. Another thing is that once you get to know certain Brokers you may work with them over and over again. Or you may work with that company if they have a lot of loads in your area and you'll get to know what those rates really are. But you'll never know it if someone else is doing the negotiating. You'll never know if all the sudden they tell you the rates are not as good why is that well because of this because of that how do you know? You're not in it you're not negotiating you're not seeing for sure what those rates are you really truly have no idea. You are surrendering probably the most important part of your business to someone else... And do you really think someone else is going to take as much care and caution and pride in your business as you do?

10/4 I copy that loud and clear. That actually was and is my biggest hang-up with leasing on is I'm essentially putting my paycheck potential in their hands and as you said there most definitely not going to be nearly as concerned as you are especially considering your getting the bulk of the percentage. Of course, technically there making more the more they get for the rate. Actually, I don't know how the dispatchers get paid I mean at least for these smaller family-owned carriers? I would think it would be by the hour or something but who knows maybe they get paid a percentage of what they get for the rate. That would be something wouldn't it lol.

After reading your response though I now understand what's really important and that's getting to know the business and like you said there's only one way to do that and that gets off my butt and do it.

I think I'm getting that old saying, "analysis paralysis".
