Hiring a driver for the second truck is a bad idea. Drivers will quit for any reason or no reason, leave your truck abanonded, damage the truck, hide it from you, steal freight. As you said you are barely making driver wages, you don't have time to deal with a second truck.

Here we go again, I'm sure this is another one of those .90 + FSC highway robbery flease deals.
Why do people agree to such low rate carriers? Tens of thousands of trucking companies out out, people need to stop settling for peanuts per mile!

    2 questions for yourself.

    1. how much do you make per mile? 2. how much does it cost per mile to run the business?

I answer my question myself. in August I did 12500 miles 2.05 dollars per mile. in Sept I did 9500 miles 2.25 dollars per mile. in Oct I did 11800 miles 2.12 dollars per mile.

for the cost, in August, I am about 15000. in Sept I am about 12000. in Oct I am about 14000. Hst ifta return not included.

in this business, no o/o gets Rich. a good wage that's it.

    1. don't run cheap. it is a very expensive business. find a worthy company.

    2. cut your cost. do your maintenance yourself. take care of your truck. your truck will take care of you. try to fuel in a cheaper state. like IL, MO, ON. I fuel in husky ontario. I fuel in speedway Illinois. my ave fuel price is around a dollar 85, after ifta, after Hst, after fuel card discount.

overall, my gross is about 260k to 270k a year. 210,000 km a year. 110k to 120k in my pocket. and it is the worst year for me since I started to become an o/o. (hst return not included) I think it is all about numbers. you should know your numbers.

Are you running with a carrier and van?

At over 2dollars a mile, your costs are 50% of gross. If total driver expenses are 30% of gross. You are left with 4k a month.
How much do you set aside for maintenance?

Buy your fuel where the price is the lowest BEFORE taxes.

    true.

as an o/o. fuel cost is a lot. you must know about ifta in every state you travel. it will help to save a couple of thousand dollars a year. maybe 15000 if you only know flying J. no kidding.

    quick questions for you.

    1.95 in ok.
    1.98 in mo.
    2.33 in in.
    2.15 in il.
    2.08 in oh.
    2.25 in or.

which state is the cheapest? which state is the most expensive state? my fuel cost is less than 25%of my gross, around 1.85 dollars per gallon after tax in 2016.

My first guess off the top of my head would be Illinois followed by ohio. I can tell you for sure Oregon in this example is the most expensive.
