Exactly. It’s like a bonus for being willing to work anytime and go anywhere. I do t see how that’s like being an employee. More like an all star contractor who knows he’s also going to make a good living with his own business .

    What is the BBB.

That’s what is funny about trucking. You change anything and people are immediately distrustful. I remember when I started doing the weekly guarantee pay for drivers about 8 yrs ago. Nobody called because they thought it was bs. Now everybody is doing it and it’s practically the norm. No wonder many aspects of trucking are stuck in the past.

Big Bad Bill. The Farm to Fleet guy. He used to post here back in the day and had the best o/o company ever in the history of trucks until it all went south quick.

My thoughts as an owner leased to a carrier: An idea like you’re talking about wouldn’t be bad as long as it doesn’t have to be every week and everyone is flexible about it. Say like by Wednesday they have to let you know their plans for the weekend so the office can plan loads accordingly to make everything work out. You may find guys that would run a couple weeks with only a 34 off and then want to take a long weekend to catch up on maintenance and stuff, or some guys want to take only a 34 every other week. If you leave it up to the owners then nobody can say you’re forcing them to do anything. But I think you’d need some guidelines for it just to avoid someone telling you at 4 on a Friday afternoon that they want to leave Sunday because they’re not getting along with their wife.

Yeah, as long as it’s setup for you to pay all the fixed costs to be leased on then I don’t care too much when someone runs as long as it’s pretty regular. I was just thinking of incentives for people that want to bust ### and work hard. To know that you can make $xxx, xxx gross yearly just for being willing to go when your legal to go might be appealing to certain people. But, if you can’t leave until after it’s been 48 or 72 hours whatever, you lose the revenue guarantee and go straight to gross percentage pay or mileage pay whatever is preferred.

Or, it could be done the same as every Tom, Dick, and Harry Trucking Inc where you get a percentage followed by a gazillion deductibles and actually have no clue if your going to make money or not. That sounds swell.

The only thing that would concern me about incentivizing owners to continually run after a 34 would be maintenance. Me personally, if I was only getting a 34 off I wouldn’t want to spend it taking care of the truck. I’m already going to have laundry to get done. So then that moves the maintenance to getting it done during the week which goes against the weekly minimum pay just for being available after a 34. Or they will put stuff off until it can no longer be ignored and that becomes a bigger problem.

What if you had your regular percentage pay and then offered a bonus of sorts to those available for dispatch after 34?

I definitely see what you mean. The one owner op I have wants me to run him the exact same as I do my trucks so we are always on the same page. In reality normally people get back Friday afternoon to evening and leave our yard Sunday in the afternoon. That way they can atleast have breakfast or go to church with family. I do notice he comes to the yard some Saturday’s to work on his truck. Larger repairs to be honest he normally just jumps in one of my open trucks and I pay him by the mile as a driver vs as an op until his truck is ready.

I appreciate the ideas. I’m just trying to think outside the box a little here and stand out as different from the others.

The bonus for being available after a 34... I’m just not sure how I would price that. I was hoping to get numbers thrown out on the guarantee thing but I figured atleast $3500/wk no matter what and more if your percentage ended up being more. That gives a minimum of $168,000 gross for just being willing to work as any company man would also be expected too. Frankly, that’s how you make money is by running consistently. You could still take a few weeks off per year but just would pay the fixed deducted costs and obviously have no revenue if that person chooses that.

I see people on here all the time not hitting that number per year even with all the costs of their own authority. I’m not stuck on $3500 though and would intend on people making more, it’s more of a safety net bar.

Biggest problem I see ? The mind of the driver. Drivers want ... drivers want ... drivers want ... drivers want ... add infinity.
Owner ops want to be protected as if they were company drivers but want to be paid as if they were business owners. They will not take on the responsibility of a business owner. Owning a truck Is not a business and driving a truck is not a business. It’s a money pit and it’s a job.

In all the decades I have been in trucking I’ve never seen the guarantee come true when you actually are working in the company ... yes at the beginning , while being recruited they have a great guarantee but once your running for them there are 16 reasons why you did not get the bonus.

I'd have to disagree on the not a business part.

It has to be managed and maintained. Like a business. It also has irs deductions. Like a business.

    Etc.etc.

No problem,4000 miles a week and a 80 mph truck is required.
