Well this may not be the best place to put this comment and I apologize in advance. But I'm heading to Springfield 4.2.13. I have posted on the threads here before but it's been a year since I posted. I used to be an O/O. That was ten years ago!! A lot has changed but a business is a business.

Im gonna go flatbed. Even at 57 I like the physical work. Even though it isn't physical for too long a period of time.

Any pointers would be appreciated. I'm starting over from step 1.

    Thanks in advance

You better be certain you really want flats before you switch. Summer is dog days of flatbeddin, its hot and miserable and if you are wishy washy about wantin to do flats you will quit. Just a word of advice from a long time flatbedder.

I hear what your saying. I loved pulling dry vans till I pulled a flat. We'll see soon. I figure refers aren't much different then vans. If that's the case I'd rather do flats. At least as long as I can.

yeah that's what I heard. I grew up in south Carolina and south Georgia, im used to the heat and physical work, i hate not really getting to do that much actual work on the reefer side. im not wishy on the work part just washy on the pay side.

If your desire is to sweat 'n smell bad, 'n hang out with the flatheads, then yeah... you'll do well over there. The dead presidents are better on the cold side from what I've seen.

I'll disagree with that. Prime's primary business is temperature controlled freight. If you really want flatbed, then go for it - but my opinion from folks I know who have gone that route is that it's tougher for a lease-op to make it on our flatbed side.

Reefer fuel is in the noise... a penny or two a mile.

Lumpers are fully reimbursed... it appears as additional income.

Toll roads? Ya know, if you can comprehend the information presented in the RMCA you can avoid toll roads. I probably have driven the Ohio and Indiana turnpikes twice in the last 3 years. NJ? Depends on how much time I have, but the only stretch I really use is I287 (Elizabeth) up to the Hoboken exits on the NJ Turnpike. PA is a little different, because the grades off of the PA Turnpike really suck - and I68 is worse; everyone has to use the Delaware River bridges, and the bridges around NYC. New Stanton to Breezewood or Carlisle is the usual trick, but I'll run to Philly if I have to. The NY Throughway is something you can't easily get around either. The rest of it really doesn't matter too much, because they're relatively cheap.

I average 1.70cpm for all miles here and some weeks better than that. My current run pays 2.25/mi all miles to the truck.Prime picksup ata lot fo the same places we do so Im sure they arent that much cheaper. Flat freight, contrary to what many think,is not cheap freight unless you want to haul that cheap junk lol. Rates have also been increasing quite a bit the past few months.
