I average well under the 12.5. Was at 3.4 last week. Sometimes even profit off the surcharge.

Having a bit of an issue getting my midroof evo to run over 8 mpg on heavier, under dimension loads. Just finished styrofoam, yeah- full dimensions but only 7.6k on the weight truck hardly managing 8.1 @ 58.
Probably grabbing steel in the morning, coils if you forced and answer out of me. I'll see similar mpg out of it. Can't stand dropping below 58.
Still so glad to be out of the POS PB, thing was threatening to run me into the ground with all the issues on that MX. This DD15 is a lot more reliable, and has yet to throw a code.
Though I did spring a nice little leak on the power stearing box the other day- misseated gasket, a good scare but no downtime.ironpony Thanks this. -
I think I averaged 8.1 doing 62 in a company peterbilt on a ~7k foam load last week; My tarp job was a mess though. -
So the questions becomes when is it better to be more efficient or to use more fuel and run an extra load (or two) At some point there has to be a break even line. And over a course of a year, if you can run one or two extra loads during a week, wouldn't the revenue from these loads pay MORE than the extra fuel saved? -
In my experience with fuel over $3 per gallon, as a general rule it rarely pays to try to pack on more miles when you're paid percentage.
I've tried it both ways... when you run faster all of your costs go up including maintenance and consumables. Considering you can't run around at 65 mph everywhere, you're only going to be able to increase the miles run by perhaps 10% or so. That's not a lot in a solo operation. Maybe you get an additional load, but I suspect its more often every other week. Minus of course higher costs.
If you increase your utilization... run slower for more hours, you'd be in better shape to increase your net. By definition that's a team operation. There are some exceptions...
- A really good paying load with a tight schedule.
- Multiple loads on the same short run paying a fixed rate.
Once you know your numbers you can run the options to see where you'll end up. Whether increased fuel costs justify running faster from both a financial and HOS
standpoint. Why run your heiny off if you don't gain enough hours to get that extra load in, or if the extra load won't pay enough to cover the costs?Last edited: Oct 30, 2014
