    Hi all,

I'm currently a spotter working for Amazon in Chicagoland. Amazon paid for me to get my CDL, but they don't give me much drive time outside of the yard. Occasionally I'll do a short run to another facility, but it isn't giving me much experience.

I'm looking to leave in the near future and join another company. Right now I'm looking at Schneider, Roehl and Prime, but I don't have the 3-6 months experience these companies seem to need (been a spotter for about 6 months, less than half of that with my CDL). Even if I did, I don't see how it would really transfer since Amazon's runs are so short. I can bump a dock pretty well, but that's about it.

Any thoughts? I've employed for over a year but have a sizeable employment gap prior to that due to caring for a sick relative. My best case would be to go to a company that would train me to do OTR, but I'm not sure how my experience and past work history would be viewed.

    Thanks!

LTLs are a option if you wanna stay local. Most may have you go threw their dock to driver program. But its worth it if you wanna stay local. I heard certain areas Old Dominion was hiring recent grads and putting them straight to the city. Not sure if its true but definitely something to check out.

Thanks. I've heard lots of good things about Old Dominion, but at the moment I'm definitely thinking OTR (at least for a couple years). I just keep hearing so many different stories about what level of experience is needed and how gaps are viewed its hard for me to know where to start.

Well, you didn't mention the type of driving you want. Local, regional, OTR, dry van, reefer, tanker, etc.
Kinda difficult to lend suggestions when you've given so little to go on.
All that said, "I think" you should also check out Swift. They are a better company to work for than their reputation with other drivers typically have. Almost every company will have drivers who like the company and others who hate it. So, always take the opinion of others, including mine, with a grain of salt. Your experience with them may be quite different than others. Both good or bad. When I went with Swift, it was more of a subjective gut, intuitive thing than any measurable quantitative thing. Fortunately, for me, my gut worked well. No company is prefect, but Swift has fit me well and I'm in no hurry to move elsewhere. But, my priorities and experiences probably differ from many others. Regardless, again, I think you should see if Swift has what you're looking for.
Good luck to you driver wherever you end up!

Thanks for the fast response! I've heard the same about Swift -- that they are decent but it is what you make of it. At this point, I'm thinking OTR and dry van to get started.

Go for refrigerated; lots of miles running coast to coast.

I think you'll be hired; this company has their own cdl school also, so that shows they hire drivers with little, to no, experience

Awesome! Follow up question...if I stay with Amazon a few more months does that count against me since I won't be driving much outside of the yard? I've heard some companies either want you fresh out of CDL school or with months of real experience.
