Leave Office Job for Truck Driving

Discussion in 'Questions From New Drivers' started by Tacomatrd99, Aug 22, 2018.

  1. In the IT world we assumed the life of a mushroom. Kept in a windowless room fed bullcrap daily and expect to be overly productive.
I left a fortune 500 many years ago.

The straw was the CEO wanted to listen to streaming music on the crappy $10. Speakers, cause we had multiple T1 trunk lines. But sitting behind his desk was a Bose sound system I'd sell a kidney for.

So now. I call it being paid to go on vacation. Different town, different load make the money and never look back.

The Timing and routing is all part of the game. It's a million times better even in 2' of snow trucking, than being in a windowless IT room at sub zero A/C.

Follow your dream take your time and learn it doesn't take long to figure the ropes out. It's the fine tuning that takes the longest.

I spent 30 years flying a desk in the legal industry in a para-professional role. After suffering a serious health setback I moved away from the San Francisco bay area to a small rural town in far northern California where I expected to die. By sheer determination and God's grace I was fortunate to have received a liver transplant which restored my health. After four years living a simple life in the country, I don't think I could ever go back to my old way of life in the city. With the limited employment prospects in my area trucking seemed like a natural choice for me.

I probably wont even need my pension, and you wont need one either if you save/invest enough of what you earn.

Get yourself a good brokerage account and start building a low risk portfolio with large cap companies and utilities. Then, if you are like me you take some risk for higher gains. My first high risk endeavor has paid out double digit interest in the first 5 weeks. With your background in IT you know the good tech companies and those are performing very well on the market right now... Microsoft, Adobe, Intuit, PayPal, etc.

With a bit of research you should be able to land a decent starter job driving and earn enough to start socking away!

    See you on the road.

As long as I have my laptop life on the road is great. When i park i can still load up some fallout 4 and explore the wasteland. Sometimes my truck doesnt seem to have enough juice to charge my big beefy gaming laptop. Most truck stops have a restaurant of some sort I can grab a table in the corner if its not crowded, plug it in and go to town.

She’s not in love with it, but she’s on board. She’s seen recently the headaches, stomach aches,a nd chest pains I’ve come home with due to the corporate nonsense, and the fact that Wednesday night I was in the office until 11 pm, and last night till 9:30 pm, she figures I’m already working the long hours. When I brought up the idea to her again a few months ago, she said she wasn’t surprised as I always talk about how much I miss it. As long as I stay local and am home most nights, she’s good with it.

    Lol. Care to elaborate?

You didn't really explain why you can't get another job in your field working 40-50 hours a week.

It sounds like you made up your mind and haven't actually tried everything to make it work in your current situation.

I’ll be honest. I’ve put my resume out to a few places in my field. I had two interviews that went really well, but I was told I’m over qualified them. One offered me a job making $40k less per year, and the other said they’d keep my resume on their books in case something higher up came along. I also put my name in for a train engineer training program as I’ve always thought about that as a career. However, it says they take 14-16 months to get back to you. And, quite honestly I’ve already burned out. Now for the rest of it, I won’t say that I’ve been really chasing a job I’m current field. I’ve been more chasing the trucking side.lol

    I say go for it.

I was in sales for several years and got burnt out by the nonsense that goes along with sales. Loved driving, so I got my CDL and never looked back. I love having the freedom to go different places and not just see the same office/cubicle day after day. Yeah there are good days and bad days like any job, but it sounds like you’d be happier in a truck.

    Good luck to you.
