NANA: Thank you for the input! Reading all across the net I have found that you either REALLY HATE or you REALLY LOVE Swift. I have seen that TEAMS seem to do really well over there and SOLO seem to be hit or miss.
I understand that they are the largest carrier in the U.S. (if I am not mistaken) so I know the freight has got to be there. Same ss with the other companies suggested, I will definately give Swift some consideration now since you spoke so highly of them and ROCK N ROLL NIK suggested them as well.
I hope no one takes offense to my comments as I am just repeating what I have been hearing and hopeing to get some honest input from someone besides the loud mouths that bash everything.
Thanks again!
Let me get this strait...

Ok, I talked to recruiters at Central Ref and Swift. I have to say I like both companies. When I filled out the Swift app, I no sooner set down the lap top and got up off the counch and the phone rang...it was my Swift recruiter.
One red flag for me was that Central will not hire any experienced drivers right now unless they lease purchase...why? Why only new guys...cost/pay??
I really liked my Swift recruiter as well, he took time and answered questions in a very professional (yet nice) manner. The CR recruiter was a nice guy too but he seemed to really wanna ruch me off the phone and only seems to really want to email me back and forth. It may just be a hectic time for him right now though. -
Settled on Central Ref and I am giving my two week notice at my work place today. I am not gonna lie, I am a little nervous as I really wanna make a good decision and do a good job. Wish me luck!

I am having issues with my recruiter at Central Ref...recruiters are the 1st impression of the company. This guy acts like he has no desire to recruit anyone. I have to email him the same email several times over the course of a few days and leave him a msg or two on his voicemail before he will finally answer me. Even when he talks to me, he doesn't say much and tries to give me the shortest answer possible (like I am bugging him or something). He has been like this from day one but I just thought maybe he has been busy on the days I tried to contact him (after all, I hadn't even given a verbal commit yet) but he is still brushing me off. Is this normal from most companies...all the other recruiters from other companies seem to actually want to recruit me. The Swift recruiter is a great guy and I would almost go with them just because of how well he treats me.
I can't help but wonder if this is a sign of things to come from Central Ref. I am not scheduled for training yet but I have committed to them as soon as my company gets back to me about allowing me to work my 2 week notice or not. THEY HAVEN'T EVEN PULLED MY DRIVING RECORD YET AND WOULD BE LEAVING IN TWO WEEKS AT THE LATEST. Heck, two of the other companies I was talking to have already got everything ready and I got noticed about them doing all my backgrounds from the reporting agencies...need some input here! -
The recruiter is paid a commission to get you on board. Call the main number and explain your issue and ask for a different recruiter. That is what I would do. I would not want that guy making any money off of me.

I am going to UT to train

All companies suck, and all are great. Depends on each persons experience.
If you want your training paid for, it IS indentured servitude in its purest form.
Basically you are going to have to give a year somewhere to get your training paid for, or you could pay for it yourself and not worry about it.
Personally I was trained by Willis Shaw back in 1998 and they were a good place to train and work at the time. I do not think they train new drivers anymore though. They are right there in NW Arkansas. Conway Truckload (used to be CFI) is a decent place also.
DO NOT LEASE PURCHASE!!!! If you want a truck, do this for a few years as a company driver, and then.....wait for it....BUY a used truck!! If your credit sucks, well you can't manage your finances, so you sure as hell can't manage a business.
