Depending on the state it was issued it might show up on your MVR for life but most are 5-10 years as far as i know. So, it should not be a problem. Especially given that positive drug tests are dealt in 3 weeks and costs $1000. I'd be surprised if your friend is having troubles with finding employment because of it
