Brings a tear to my eye! My wife and I went through the same thing though I had my license already. Husband/wife teams are treated like gold and you guys are going to make very good money! As for the curtain thing, you can't slam a curtain shut like a door when you get mad but if it has a zipper you can still make a dramatic effect! We never really had any problems getting along out there. You actually don't see each other that much because someone is always driving while the other is sleeping. Its nice running team because the duties are divided up. My wife would do all the paperwork, phone calls, qualcomm, logs etc.. and i took care of the mechanical side of things and the extreme driving and backing. Its good to remind each other every time you switch drivers about safety. I would always tell my wife, "slow down, pay attention"! Your safety is the most important thing out there, so don't let it slip by the wayside. Helps the person going to bed to have a better rest too!
Despite all the money we made the memories and adventures we had far out weighed what we ever earned....
Good luck guys!
Let's get it started!!!!!

Guess what, guys!! I did it !!! I passed my test and got my CDL's!!!! I took the test on thursday and autofailed coming back into the back gate of the school at the end of the test route. I shifted on the tracks. I was so excited that I was almost back I crossed the tracks in the cab but forgot about letting the trailer cross completely!!! LOL!!! But I took it again on Friday and cried like a baby when he told me I passed. And I took care of my business at the school and the BMV, went to the hotel and packed my clothes and got home friday night around 10:30. Perfect timing, because my family & friends had planned a birthday party for me for saturday. So today is my birthday and I got my CDL's. I feel like a million bucks right now. And what a celebration we had!!!!

28 years ago, when I got trained to drive a school bus (stick) and later a transit bus (auto), all we were required to do is stop, open the front door and driver window and look both was, then proceed across the tracks only if we had enough room to clear the tracks. I don't recall anything being said about not shifting the manual transmission while on the tracks but like I said, this was many years ago.

Rick_C i read that also he seemed so upset but the book says no shifting till it clears the track and could take 12-15 seconds to clear the tracks.

Got an intersection/crossing close to where I live where you cross the tracks and immediately (50-60 feet) are in the intersection. It's signaled with red lights before you get to the track so (in theory) you're not on the tracks stuck at the red when a train approaches. The problem at this particular location (IMO) is that the green light is pretty short-timed and some big trucks might not make it across the tracks and through the intersection without "almost" running the red light. It's a pretty heavily traveled truck route and I'm surprised there haven't been any accidents (that I know of).
