I had a '99 Sterling, on that truck they hung the mufflers underneath between the tanks and straight pipe back and up. That truck just sounded sweet, a nice rumble from the length of the straight pipe under power, and the mufflers shut up the jakes to just a nice deep growl.

Nice clean underside! You get a space benefit from the sleeper. On mine I go from the turbo into a S pipe down to along side/inside the frame, then back to the end of the day cab to a 90 degree wye, then flex to the elbows on the end of the stacks. One flex is fairly long, the other is short. I don't think I have enough space to replace most of the flex with shorty mufflers but will check further when the truck gets back from our runs today. My main quandary is whether to mount a longer single muffler between the trans and the frame prior to the wye or go with twin mufflers after the wye. Riding along yesterday, the drone appeared to be coming from under my feet on the passenger side. I did not seem to get much of a sensation of rumble from behind.

PS - why am I not doing the runs. I am a retired engineer and have no CDL (yet). We started a partnership LLC with me doing maintenance/fixup (mostly been wiring), my daughter running the paperwork part (dot/mc/insurance/loads, etc) and my future son-in-law doing the driving (and wrenching). Just a little background. We are doing pretty good. We just installed a wet kit and in-cab tarp control and everything worked when we picked up an end dump trailer!

If it's coming from the floorboard, check the S pipe and it's mounts/clamps, make sure it's not touching anything or leaking. It doesn't take much to make a racket under there.

Keep it simple put a single short muffler/resonator before the Y.

Yeah I kind of have an idea what the Pete day cab exhaust is like. I've seen those resonators like special-k mentioned. Don't know how they sound though. They're really short. Probably your best option. You can get them pretty cheap at any truck parts place.

Look at some other Pete's. A lot of them 90 or 45 down after turbo, flex, 90 or 45 back, 5" pipe bracket on lower cross member. Muffler can go next to that. Lots of room easy to work with and you can keep your straights.

Took a break this weekend in 10 degree weather to look under the truck. All of the muffler clamps are directly mounted to frame hangers with metal to metal supports. We are going to take some mine belting and make some rubber supports and isolate the entire system from the frame. That should help the drone immensely. Probably going to wait until it gets a bit warmer, though...

I think we will also lower the stacks about 6 inches so we can back it into the shop. It would be really nice to be able to close the door and fire up the torpedo heater and work on the truck there. The door is 12 ft high and still not high enough for those pretty stacks. Should have built a 14ft high shop.

    Drone still winning...

We completely isolated the exhaust using open country bushings on the stacks themselves, and rubber isolation bushings on all mounts underneath. No joy.

Going to now install a muffler.
