I'm sorry, but no one can do everything without the assistance of others.
Do you call for directions? That is assistance from another.
Do you use maps and/or GPS? That is assistance from other people.
Do you get dispatched on loads? That is...
Do you call when you break down? That is...
None of us do this job as a one person operation.
Let's talk about the 'driver shortage'.

Let me re-clarify things then..... Use of Common knowledge in operation.
And Yes, I try to run my operation as tight as the Famous Flames, Without the assistance of many, (I suppose if you choose simple tools such as a Map and telephone), You win this discussion. I do not rely on others for dispatch (I pool my own customers and pre-plan weekly). A call to a breakdown service never happens ,I don't believe in tow trucks, Never will, I repair my own equipment without fail.Last edited: May 4, 2016
MidwestResident Thanks this. -
Should a company driver be able to do his or her own repair work on the road?
Also, should this be a requirement for a company driver to be hired on as an OTR company driver?

If worse comes to worse, perhaps convicted felons, who have finished serving their sentences, along with being off of both parole and probation, can be recruited to drive the nations trucks, especially OTR.

How about setting up so current prisoners go on a work program, go on truck arrest, and make it so that they cannot be more than a 1/4 mile from their truck otherwise they get a vicious shock.
Make them serve out their sentence driving an OTR truck, I wonder how many will beg to go back to prison?Dharok, Midnightrider909, addrenjunky and 3 others Thank this. -

There is NO driver shortage, there is plenty of drivers who are not working and for one or another reason.
My last ad ran for three weeks, I got 73 people calling about it, with 26 applications. If we had a driver shortage, then I would get 3 people calling and only one application.Moon_beam, Lepton1, brian991219 and 2 others Thank this. -
And what makes it worse?
These carriers DO have the funds/profits to pay a quality wage plus benefits...But Choose not to .(a quality drivers wage for OTR is 65-80k per year plus zero deductible healthcare)
The Officers/owners of these carriers will NOT Hinder their profits and would rather go out of business as opposed to paying wages/benefits with Luster...
Insurance companies operate the same way..If their Profit levels don't match their annual prospects, your premiums go up.......If everyone were to say "No" to the increases (as they should) They'll just go out of business.
Sorry state of affair big business and America have become.
...
And You guys bad mouth Unions........ Just what the owners of these companies WANT you to say.Pintlehook, AlexFromMD, superflow and 2 others Thank this. -
people are like cattle wandering the field, thinkn their free, thinkn someone cares about them, then theyre loaded up an off to slaughter without a clue of what just happened, so move along cattle theres freight to haul.
Toomanybikes and TripleSix Thank this. -
A carrier needs to pay their operations team also. They need to profit, invest, compete, and maintain a steady growth. You want the entire pay of the load you haul, go buy a truck. The shop guys don't work for free, or the sales brokers that get the contracts, or the dispatch guy. Want more pay? Go buy a truck and see if you can do better.
Arnasme and MidWest_MacDaddy Thank this.
