Surprisingly there isn't much on this here. I found one thread from 5 years ago.
I have a 2015 VNL with a D13 and am specifically asking about Volvo and Volvo engines.
Why? Volvo dealer says red coolant only. No mixing of red and green. Actually, I didn't know there was a difference between red and orange (Dexcool, supposedly) and I've been using Prestone Dexcool for awhile.
Well, APU hose blew the other night and I lost all of whatever was in there. No Volvo dealer close and my local dealer wants $13 per gallon for the red stuff. That's fine if I was close.
Now at parts stores and Walmart I'm seeing lots of "mixes with anything" coolant. I was about to pour it in when I called my local Volvo dealer and he said he wouldn't chance it.
Let's talk (Volvo) coolant

Edit: Please don't confuse anything I'm asking with the 50/50 mixes. I'm asking about the formula of coolant, not wanting to start a debate on who gets the best deal mixing pure with water or buying the 50/50 stuff. The 50/50 stuff is a complete waste of money, by the way. It's for people who can't or won't think.
I'm trying to talk color/formula here. -
We just stick with red. I have either final charge or Rotella ELC available at our terminal for the drivers. Use Road Choice too. 10 trucks, plenty of issues, but none caused by coolant choice...
86scotty, PE_T and Newto Trucking Thank this. -
This are the two I’ve seen on a Volvo with d13 engines. 85% of them were red stickers

I don’t have a Volvo, but I use the red coolant with a semi truck on the bottle sold at Walmart. I’ve also used the brand TA/Petro sells. The color is also red. All the mechanics who have added new coolant to my truck have always added the red coolant.

The majority of new trucks use red ELC coolant as the factory fill.

Ok, I’m seeing almost everyone is using the red stuff.
What about the “mix with anything” stuff if you have a breakdown or emergency? -
I'd say to use whatever it came from the factory with, that's what I do. I'd avoid the "mixes with anything" stuff. Also, always mix with distilled water, change the filter when required, and flush and refill when recommended, as the lubricating qualities break down.
In an emergency, you do what you gotta do. I drew water from a creek one time when I had too. -
clausland Thanks this.

The reason for distilled water is the mineral content in tap or spring water can cause problems within the engine, like sandblasting it from the inside out, actually making holes if bad enough. Your coolant filter will remove much of it though, just don't overlook changing it....PE_T Thanks this.
