OP is right. Depending on the brand of ELD, you can go back at least 2 weeks. I know that some of the brands that you buy in the truck stop or wherever will show activity going back longer than 7 days. The Omnitracks only shows the previous 8 days.

If they were not tied together, was his eld connected to the ECM? Or was it just an app running on a tablet?

I'm still stuck on it was 3 weeks ago. And if you were in the in the truck, you should have been in sleeper berth or off duty.
