Yes light is needed eventhough the plate is painted with reflective paint. Lol!
Our box trucks have the plates mounted up on the rollup door because they have lift gates. The light is mounted under the tailights and is next to the plate. Wired to taillights.
They make a couple dozen different styles so you should be able to find something that works for you.
Plate lights are just reasons for traffic stops and tickets. Headlights illuminate them just fine and every cop has a spotlight to use too.

I ended up going with another company, this one has everything it needs to pass DOT as far as I can tell. All lights working and equipped (including LP light lol) just waiting on the ecm to get new fuses and get the fuel filter replaced.
-
I was gonna do the same thing but why should I? If they are going to not even put a LP light on then they won't do anything for the truck in general.
-
Yeah the funny part was they didn't even HAVE a light installed and told me: Sorry sir, we do not make "modifications" to the vehicles." REALLY? It's a dot violation!
-
My dad has been driving for 40 years now, he has told me if you have so many lights it looks like the Rockefeller tree in NY everyone of those lights must work.
-
Your dad is wrong. And before you start accusing a company of being dirty, you might want to know the regulations.
Go read part 393 on what's required.
https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/subtitle-B/chapter-III/subchapter-B/part-393
§ 393.9 Lamps operable, prohibition of obstructions of lamps and reflectors. (a) All lamps required by this subpart shall be capable of being operated at all times. This paragraph shall not be construed to require that any auxiliary or additional lamp be capable of operating at all times. -
That red part is a fairly recent update. Arizona was notorious for writing up a burned out chicken light back in the day.Lonesome Thanks this.
-
If you want to call 2005 recent I guess. I wouldn't, but I guess since it's 17 years old someone might call that recent. 393.9 was last updated ... [70 FR 48027, Aug. 15, 2005] Heck, I don't even know if that provision was added even earlier or what the revision was, only that was the last update to that section.
-
Well, since the regulations themselves are substantially older than 17 years, I believe that qualified as recent. I'd been driving 21 years at the time of that change, and there's plenty of guys who've been around longer.GreenPete359 Thanks this.
