Here is the confusion-
I was orginally licensed in 12/4/90 as a Novice then upgraded to Tech. Since then, I have changed my call from KB7JXB to KD7LQW and currently K7TKR. Since I was-am-used to be-a coded tech-is there a grand-father approch to General under the current rules?
I am not attempting to wriggle out of some study-just trying to get the facts straight since I've been told 10 different stories by 10 different people in regard to this.
I think I might be the last of the coded-tech hangouts and it's about time to set that straight.

Check with your local club ....
HOWEVER .... How it works is ....
You passed the code which is not needed anymore ......
IF the element you passed is the same as the one for the general class
you should get credit for it ......
From the ARRL ....
" The FCC grants exam Element 3 credit to individuals that previously held certain older types of licenses. "
IF so if you have the credit the VE should be able on paper to give you credit for your general.
BRING YOUR LICENSE BOTH TECH AND NOVICE so you can prove you had them .....
Since i had a code tech license from the mid 60's and copys of them in 2000 my local VE at the St. Pete ( Fl ) had no problem doing the paperwork.... a few years later I took the extra class

Unfortantly, I have only the current license in hand. However, since the goverment seems to hang onto data forever, my two previous calls are in the ULS and can be reserched-as I did-to verify information. I suppose all one has to do is look at the date then remember what the license criteria was when the license was issued.
I'm gonna buy the current book anyway-took the practice tests over at QRZ.com and was well, surprised to see how rusty I was. Guess there is truth to the old adedge of not using it and losing it.

This all I found for you maybe it might help.
In your case you were not licensed before 1985 however othere MAY be able to use OSL cards that have a stamp and post mark with a old call
I have 100's of cards back into the mid 60's or EVEN awards like SMIRK or 10-10
with a date on them.

I'm a VE and from what I find is the Tech & the Tech Plus are the same after the code was dropped. And you will have to take the General test. But I'll dig a little more. And let you know by Sunday.
-
SO .... they changed the TECH written since i took it in 1965 .....
Elm 3 is no longer part of the tech test ???? -
It changes every few years. Elm 2 is Tech, Elem 3 is General, and Elm 4 is Extra. In 45 years much has changed. The General pool will change this July.
-
SO unlike when I took it they now have diffrent tests
for tech and general
It used to be the same only code speed was diffrent .... -
Yes, You must take the General writen test to upgrade.
-
Im looking forward to the day when they have a beginners license and a full license. There is no difference between general privileges and extra except a bit more bandwidth. If there was, then why did the FCC get rid of the advanced level?
