I may be incorrect in thinking this but when you signup for a trucking company sponsored training to become a driver I would expect that before the company agreed to pay for your training that they would complete any verification's they do so as to not waste money training someone and then not being able to hire them. Now I understand you can fail in the training but that is to be expected. Why would you risk paying for someones schooling only to decide you cannot hire them because of a error on the application?

I would think that would be the case but companies want your money. I was at Swift Academy in 2011 and I saw it firsthand. Students arrive there and in some cases have to find their way home because they failed the physical or something came up that was on their background check that Swift failed to check and the student lied or did not know about. Honestly, this is wrong, but if this happens all the time because they need people to fill their seats and make a profit from the subsidies they get.

If the person lied on the application that is not the schools or the trucking companies fault. I would be interested in seeing what percentage of people that enroll in a company sponsored cdl program get kicked out for non driving related issues and then actually payoff the training. My guess is a large number of them simply get pushed off to collection agencies and then churn until the 3 to 10 year cycle elapses and they can finally drop off the credit reports.

The Swift Academy was $4500 back in 2011. You had to sign a piece of paper stating that I think it was 25 bucks a paycheck every week for two years or maybe it was 50 bucks for one year plus a $500 Hotel room fee for the Admiral TN in Millington. That I know for sure of. Total of $5000 over the course of one or two years.

I had a gentleman that I was friends with actually go to collection agencies, and I never got a chance to speak to him after a while back. So my guess is the collection agencies gave up on him.

I've never had an issue with this. Some major companies will require exact dates and everything. I've had plenty that call me up after my application and explain that they have different employment dates from what I put on my app, and maybe even I'm missing an employer or two. I just tell them that I made an "estimation" on my work history and whatever they found is probably correct. Then they usually just ask me to confirm the info they have found. Never in my 10 years has a company talked to a previous employer.

Some companies will verify employment like Indian River, and other companies will go upon what you said. Personally, if it was me, I would verify your criminal history, your driving record, and the last five years of employment. That way there’s less paperwork and you’re covering all the basics. But hey, that’s just me.

As others have pointed out, don't overthink it currently. Get your CDL first, and figure it out from there. I got a little creative with dates, employment gaps when I first started, but I wrote it all down on a cheat sheet and kept it in my wallet, that way if ever questioned I could pull it out and rattle off the same dates everytime. Never had an issue whatsoever. Just get your stuff together as accurately as you can, and right it down so you always give the same info. I started with a local milk hauling gig that @Chinatown turned me on too, paid my dues and kept my record clean for 2.5 years, now I'm 5 years in and hauling fuel for Chevron/REG.

Yeah, I remember that. You didn't post much after you started running the roads hauling milk.
    Congratulations!

Yea, milk hauling doesn't leave you much time for any kind of life lol. lot's of downtime at receivers, but I always got out of the truck and walked around to get some kind of exercise. That was a long 2.5 years, but it helped me avoid going OTR as a newbie, and it's paid off in spades now. Appreciate you Chinatown!
