if you noticed, he was talking about the LTL division, not the otr division.
CFI was just recently bought by Con-Way, in the last couple of years.

I do what I have to do to provide myself a good paycheck.

I run semi-local, 300 mile trips, same places all the time. That being said, if I start my last workday at 8am, and have the next day off, no way I am shutting it down at 10pm, if I can be done by 1am. Especially because I would be within 30 miles of my house.

Actually if I am going to end any workday I try to get to the house, I rarely will shut it down within 50 miles of the house, unless I am really tired.

Here's a couple of examples of creative logging.
    1. You are empty waiting on a load. You have your 10 hour break in and you get dispatched to go pick up a load 2 hours away. You get to the shipper when you are suppose to and then you have to wait 5 hours to get loaded because the freight wasn't ready, the forklift ran out of gas, the warehouse was on lunch...name the excuse. Now you are 7 hours into your 14 hour rule. Your load has to be delivered 500 miles away 12 hours from now. So you have 7 hours to drive a 8+ hour trip. Now the consignee is closed till morning so you can't call to find out if you can reschedule the delivery and you don't have time for a 10 hour break. So what do you do? If you have spent your 5 hours waiting in the sleeper you could stay there 3 more to use the 8 hour split sleeper rule but the shipper wouldn't let you stay in the truck. You have been in their break room for the last 5 hours. So you "LIE" and say you were in the sleeper the whole time use the 8 hour to put the 14 on hold and get a 3 hour power nap to get the load there on time.
    2. You are in an area with few truck stops. When you started driving that morning you planned on stopping 650 miles up the interstate at a nice truck stop with plenty of parking, getting fuel, shower, and taking you 10 hour break. But you got caught in traffic coming through a big city at 3:30. You thought you would beat rush hour and make good time. So now you are 30 minutes away from your truck stop with only 15 minutes left on your 11 hour rule. So what do you do? You can just make a note of why you went over on you log and hope the DOT is in a good mood that day. But you "LIE" and show that 15 minute bathroom break at Noon as taking 30 minutes to extend your driving time and making it there in 11 hours.

Most drivers out here have done this sort of creative logging before and never even think about it. But there are others that have ran until they are out of hours, started a new log book and showed that they just finished their 10 hour break and will continue to do so until they get caught or hurt someone. There is another post on here somewhere about a driver losing everything after parking his truck at home and going to bed. A drunk driver hit his parked truck and the driver was sued because if he was following the HOS his truck wouldn't have been there.

well first to use the paperless logs on a laptop, you have to make sure the company will accept them. most will not. so then you are going to have to transfer to their logs what you did. also some motor carrier safety officers will not accept what is on the laptop. they need to see papers for the last 7 days. now if the company has the OBER in the trucks, then the dot officers will have a way to plug into the truck or the company will have to fax the copies for the last 7 days.

While I've a logged a 30 min break to extend my day (traffic etc), my more common "Creative Coloring" is below.

Arrive at reciever the night before (say 2200) mark that I docked at 2230, and depart 10hrs later when in reality... Arrive 2200, dock the next morning # 0400, sit inside while they unload me, then get breakfast or take a nap till my 10 is up.
This has been my most common situation at See What I Fouledup Today.

If you have to lie on your logbook in order to make a 8 or 10-hour break work, I think you need a new mattress!

    :biggrin_25523:

I always tell DOT that I drive a truck because I wasn't creative enough to figure out how to make money some "normal" way! What??? Me get creative???

I make pretty #### good money without lying, have I been creative a few times? Yes! but never out right lied. If you're lying, look for another company, or plan your trips better, or dont bite off more than you can chew!

It does not matter. The law is the law. If you choose to break the law, by all means, have at it. It's your record. I guess you work for a company that cannot afford to pay their drivers properly if they work legal. Sorry to hear that.
