You have to remember that the WLL is 1/3 (IIRC) the actual breaking limit on the securement device. So if it is rated at 6,600# (3/8" chain) the actual breaking limit is 19,800#.... so you're not really securing it with just 10k on a 20k piece. The DOT have already taken into account the stupidity of most truck drivers and made regulations to curb their neglance LOL

I would put 8 (4double) then i put 4 inch straps (2) from the rear standing with coil in front of you wile on side of trailer over coil to the front of other side and vise verse so it crosses the straps .. not sure if i am clear explanation but it works well . Shotgun 2 cross 2 horseshoe and 5.. 4 inch straps over top ... then i drive like a old man slow n steady ..remember the tortoise and the hare ?...Yes chains are better than straps on steel

I prefer to just load 1 single 45K coil on a stepdeck. Chain and go.... I give you guys props for hauling multiple coils. That would take up way too much time for me.

Even easier with a Roll-Tite or Quick-Draw..... but Melton doesn't have them fancy one's.

I was school by old timers these green books were not in trucks 25 years ago . I was told to make sure you had plenty of tie downs and drove according to load you were hauling . IMO these coils 40k and over should b on special trailers . and if these drivers keep dropping them on cars it will happen .. and it just dawned on me they talk about 5400 rate on trailer don't matter if the binder is what ? rated 4000 ? i'm not sure what it is .

Why would 3 coils weighing 45k take more time ? same amount of chains right ? won't take me any longer to tarp or toss out the extra racks n wood .

More people need to drive according to the loads that are on their decks...coils and pipe are things that like to slide through cabs, but yet I see drivers tailgating with them on all of the time...
