    Hey, (tldr on bottom)

I’m in a predicament. I’m debating between a few options , but before that, here’s a little about me.

My parents are moving and I have to find a place to live. I don’t have a car(since s few weeke ago, but i fan drive), no friends in the US I can crash with(one friend in Canada is willing to let me hang with her for a couple months),no credit, and $1,600 in my bank account. I receive $1000 from the state a month.

I’m not sure what the right move is.

    1) Visit my friend for 2 ish months, and study for the permit, have about 4k when I Grayhound back to Illinois, then either:

    A) Rent a room of Craigslist for 600-800 a month prob $1500 ish up front. Leaving me with about 2k left, then maybe I’d be able to find some used car to get me to and from CDL school(which the state would pay for)

    or

    B) Rent a room frim craigslist and sign up to Prime, Rohl, swift etc CDL school asap.

    Or

    2) Rent a room NOW and Go to Prime Swift etc CDL school once i pass my permit/feel confident in my knowledge.

Thing is im in a real bad headspace right now, bad environment, have trouble thinking, have schizophrenia(it’s controlled I’ve had it for a long time, and im stable, and it’s not a disqualifier so before you try to put your old judgmental opinion on here trying to discourage me, dont, this is what I want to do). My friend id visit would get attached and cry when I leave, and I dont want to lead her on…but I’ve been a selfless person all my life, so maybe i should think about myself for once?

I’ve heard a lot of negative about Prime, etc. and a lot of positives about private schools,

    - Is it even possible to get a car for 2-4k?
    - what would you do in my situation?

PLEASE LEAVE OUT ANY NEGATIVITY AND KEEP IT TO YOUR SELF

    Thanks

    Situation (TL;DR)

    • You’ve got $1,600 now + $1,000/mo income
    • No car, no US support system, no credit
    • State will cover CDL school
    • Friend in Canada is offering support for a couple months
    • Mental health: Schizophrenia — stable, controlled, and you’re clear-minded on your goal
    • Environment now is toxic, and it’s messing with your headspace
    • You don’t want to hurt your friend, but you know you need clarity and space to grow

Sign up for trucking company cdl school then you won't need a car.
Also will be provided free meals & lodging & transportation to the school.
You don't need to buy a car or rent a place to live.

Thanks, I’m just worried that I won’t be able to retail the information due to the stress I’m under right now, I feel like I need a few months to come back to normal

Why trucking? Are you sure it’s something you want to do? What if you’re under contract for schooling and the job sucks? Just a couple things to think about.

If you’re sure it’s what you want to do I’d do it sooner rather than later. And I wouldn’t worry about a car or an apartment right now.

Why trucking: I think it would be awesome. I thrive being alone, like to drive, Dads a trucker so I’ve been in them before and think it’s cool af(scary and hard though).
Am I sure it’s something I want to do: yes and no, I want to try it - which makes the point of a megacarrier kind of a important point, the contract would be worrisome if I decided it want for me, but i have to do something.

I’ll be fine. It’s the home environment, past/current abuse and trauma that I need to get away from.

You're not the first and won't be the last who chose trucking to avoid homelessness. Sign up for a mega carrier cdl training program- housing and some pay. If it doesn't work out, so be it. They could try and collect, good luck to them. Can't get blood from a stone.

More concerning to me is whythe $1,000 a month from the government?

You can get a CDL with Schizophrenia? But a man can't smoke a joint on his time off? This industry is nothing but a clown show.

God I hate it, when anyone want serious answers, they take the negative with the positive otherwise you are just here here to look for a yes you can answer but this isn’t about you, it is about the safety of others.

I am not going to sugar coat anything, I am not picking on you but the opposite, I want you to really really make sure you are willing to go through all kinds of crap to drive a truck. Having important information to make informed and realistic decisions is what is needed, not bs crap about how everyone can be a driver so they can be ‘rescued’ out of a bad situation.

So read what I am posting and think about it.

I had a couple drivers who had this problem and they left because they could not handle the job. I accommodated them the best I could but it was a problem for all involved.

This is a business where if you are triggered by a comment on a forum, then … you should not be in a truck for any reason.
I would go get a job anywhere, McDonald’s, Home Depot … anywhere to build yourself up, but not trucking.

The FMCSA has specific guidelines on your condition, you have to qualify and being sensitive over simple issues will cause you to disqualify for a dot physical. And you can not cheat on it, and it will come out.

Below on the bottom of my post are those guidelines of what an examiner is looking for.

Explain, don’t bs us about it, what is toxic?

You only presented two simple problems, nothing that can’t be fixed.

seriously explain what you mean by toxic.

also while I’m at it, you have no car, so do you even have a license, where do you live and how old are you.
    So go with them.
Really, that’s not how it works, this a really dangerous vocation, truck drivers account for 13% of all road fatalities, they are number one for fatalities of all industries, and we have the most litigious industry in the world.
Not all the time, the op needs to tell us what medicine they are taking, if they have ever been committed and a number of things that we as professionals can advise him/her with the truth.

the examiner without a doubt will be asking a lot of questions, they are required by regulation to ask about the condition, the treatment plan and a lot of other details that goes along with this problem. They may even want to talk to your treating doctor, and may not accept their opinion.

They can not mess around with this one and if the driver lies (which is very common), they can lose their cdl and drivers license or worse.

The insurance companies put this in a high risk category because a lot of people do not follow the treatment plan and/or do follow-ups with their doctors. Even the underwriters of ‘self insured’ carriers have been dealing with this issue and a few drivers have been let go because of it.

Back to the op, seeing this is a regulated industry, you can not hide behind medical privacy.

The guildlines are in the next post.
