i did mine somewhat the same way. i just put a cut off valve in the line to the front two air bags, i use 2 2 inch straps. i just drive up on two blocks( 2 section of a 2x6 18 inches long, screwed together and cut at an angle on one end) , dump the air go under in front of the axle and tighten up the two 2 inch straps, then cut off the air valve . then air back up the suspension and drive off the blocks.

takes 10 minutes at the most , and gets .75 to 1 mile mpg.

my cost was 46.00 total for valve fittings and 2 2 inch straps

i am thinking of outfitting a 12v winch to lift.

Mine was closer to $100. But the ball valve I used happened to be an all stainless lockout type for chemicals, not cheap, but was handy as my landlord had it on his service truck and I didn't have to go shopping.

I have been thinking of putting a lift on my stepdeck. I need to go study your pictures more closely.

Autocar, the only concern I would have with your system is the axle wanting to teeter and let a tire kiss the ground. Maybe not a problem for your flat, but for a step in might be. I wouldn't be able to get my tires as far off the ground as a flat.

I don't understand why you guys can't order these trailers with lift axles??? In Ontario we have MANY trailers with lift axles on all kinds of trailers (lowboys, flatbeds, drop-deck, vans, garbage trailers, dump trailer etc..) everything works from inside the cab using the trailer accessory switch... Plus manual lock outs on the trailer when you don't need them.... The newest style we now use is steerable lift axles and are now required in Ontario... They do not lift unless your backing up or they are manually locked up from the trailer.. This reduces damages on the roads during turn this way all the weight is distributed evenly during the turn..

Anyhow these companies must have trailers with lift axles already installed.... I have even many spreads where the front axles lift up to save wear and tear on one axle..
