Lightest 5th Wheel

    LOL Thats exactly how my wife would tell me!

    She might say it like,.. "You know,.. one of your red lights is out on the back of the trailer". Oh really? Tell me all about it dear.

    It was the peanut light on the side. She didnt know what it was called... only that it was out. I knew about it,. .problem was that its specific to Fontaine trailers and has to be special ordered and why I hadnt replaced it till I got home. Most of the time she is pretty good on spotting things.

    Update: I found a Holland video online showing how to properly adjust a FW8, so I gave it a try before going and buying a new one. Glad I did, I was able to get all the slop out, and there's still plenty of adjustment left for later.

    I still like the FW35's 2-jaw setup better, and if I ever need to replace mine, I'll be going with that one.

    @Oscar the KW I'm curious, what did you not like about the Jost? I hate my Fontaine, I had several trucks with Hollands I liked them real well and that's what I would most likely get but I'm interested in the ups and downs of all of them.

    The biggest complaint I had with it was the slider, when you slid it it would often times get ####eyed, then the locking mechanism wouldn't engage. It didn't like to stay in adjustment either, course that could be from picking up a mechanical rgn to many times with the piss poor ramps the previous owner had made.

    What does everyone hate about their Fontaine 5th wheels? Other than the 10 year old springs on mine stretching and breaking (did a rebuild while the top plate was off) I've never had a problem with mine, and it beats the piss out of all the jost 5th wheels I had to deal with as a company driver.

    I'm of the opinion I would have been better off keeping my old American one and doing a kit instead of replacing the whole thing.

    My issue is that every 3 months I'm pressure washing the grease and gook out so I can adjust it because it wont stay tight.

    A word to anyone that thinks the jaws are loose. Always check the saddle bushings. Being nylon they wear the fastest. Simply drop your trailer and put a pry bar under the pin lip and push down. If the pin moves then the bushing is worn out.

    Once you start using Holland's you quickly realize why they are the best. We use fw70 on trucks and b trains have the fw35 on lead trailers. When properly adjusted I would say adjustment is only needed every 18 months. I do believe that Holland make an aluminum version of the fw35 you just have to keep an eye on the Teflon wear pads
